Posted March 5, 2021 TLDR/ My Dad wants to be tech independent which OS. My Dad is willing to part with £1000. He has used iphones since the first one which makes me think that mac os will be for him and I am ok with mac os so there's that. On the other hand I built my first Gaming PC last year not really any problems with it. And was going to upgrade anyway keeping my GPU OFC. A ipad is about the same size as a laptop, so if you want portable, it about the same ability to lose.
 That is true after writing the initial post I thought about that so it is down to either an imac or my PC downgraded, I will take my 1660 super out and replace it with a much lower powered gpu. He doesn't even need a GPU if the CPU has integrated graphics. But I think it should really be your dad's choice if he wants something portable or a desktop situation, if it's his money, it's his choice. If he wants a desktop, then the Mac Mini is a good choice, if he wants something portable, the entry iPad is great or even a Macbook Air would be great. I may be stupid, but at least I'm not an idiot.
Posted March 5, 2021 If he's never used a Mac before don't bother. They're expensive and not as intuitive as people may expect coming from iOS, coming from someone in IT. Windows is familiar for many people and more than suitable for the things you said he plans on using it for. I built a Ryzen 3200G system for my grandma that was dirt ass cheap and works great for her. I've got it locked down to where she can't do much else besides access her web browser and open other system applications. This keeps her from installing shit that she otherwise would bog her system down with (seen this on MacOS as well). A properly setup PC and well given instructions work like a charm. Posted March 5, 2021 Start with a second-hand ipad. 1 or 2 Generations old. See how he likes it / if he loses it in a month. Don't blow 1000L on tech that he ain't gonna like.

Posted March 5, 2021 Another vote for an iPad here. Alternatively, if you are building a desktop then just bite the bullet and get him used to Linux. If you're really starting with someone who's never used a computer before, and all he needs to do is basic tasks which don't require hugely specialist software, then why would you want to teach him Windows, which is really no more intuitive than some Linux distros (and has far more malware circulating, not to mention whatever Microsoft might decide to do to it) when he could learn a free, open source, and (if you choose the right distro) more stable alternative and be just as happy? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ pythonmegapixel into tech, public transport and architecture // amateur programmer // youtuber // beginner photographer Thanks for reading all this by the way! By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it. Posted March 6, 2021 Are you waiting for someone to suggest something Linux based? If so... Just set him up with Debian/Gnome. It rarely gets updates, but when it does, Gnome Software will automatically download the update data and give a checkbox option to run updates before shutdown. Very user friendly. Make sure to set "layers.acceleration.force-enabled" to true in Firefox to prevent screen tearing. I can help you setup firmware and drivers if you're not a Linux guy. lumpy chunks Expand to help Bunny reach world domination (\__/) (='.'=) This is Bunny.
