Will we ever see a "SATA IV"?

Saearrin

Considering the new power standard of MoBos and PSUs(12V from the PSU being converted by the MoBo), is it possible that in the near future we'll see the death of current SATA, so that it'll be replaced by a single-cabe solution?

I wish! But I believe sata III came out over a decade ago. So probably not.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Latest revision of SATA is 3.6 and was released in July 2020, I am certain SATA will stick around for longer. As for connectors, I dont think we will see a connector change anytime soon.

From the looks of it, ssds and m.2 will be the main way of storage in desktops in the future. Hdds seem to be dieing a slow death.

For normal people, maybe, but for data hoarders, who aren't yet at a point to build an actual server, multiple HDDs in a single case is still needed.

People study patent applications to predict these sorts of things. I dont have time for that so im gonna say i reckon the future standard will be based on fiber optics.

Sata is probalby gonna be fine for hdds for a while longer.

And SAS keeps getting better and faster, so Im guessing hdds will just move to sas only, and sas will slowly go away with hdds in the consumer market.

SAS is a bit big, isn't it? I was thinking something along the lines of USB-C, small and easy to cable manage.

Its pretty much the same size as sata on hdds.

HDDs are still much slower than sata, so no reason to upgrade sata, and probably won't be in consumer systems by the time they get faster than sata 3 speeds. I think part of the reason sata never got a 12gbit standard is for power consumption.

Also if you want faster, migth as well just go pcie, and you get lower overhead, and no controller needed.

Spinning rust will never be fast enough to need PCI-E. My issue with SATA is the need to have 2 separated cables. Which is why I mentioned USB-C.

A good amount of oem systems will have one cable, that connects to the full sata connector, probably gonna get more common if 12vo takes off.

But might as well use pcie for hdds, lower overhead, and you don't need a seperate controller on the board for it.
