Things you liked that disapeared from the market.

LOST TALE

PC software boutique stores.  Babbage's, Egghead Software, etc. from the 80s and 90s.

Something about walking into a store and buying software and games that were packaged in a box is really fun.  Opening the materials and reading from the paper manuals.  Games from the 80s were immersive with not just the software, but also the packaging.    Mystery/suspense story type games would come with hints/clues in the packaging.  And really really tough games could be purchased with "hint books", because there was no internet or email address to get the answers.

I also kindof miss the nostalgia of dial up modems before internet... picking up a local newspaper and getting the list of dial up Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), running home to dial-in and find shareware/freeware stuff, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board_system

That is all archaic stuff, but I kinda miss it too.

Those times where there was no internet and you could go outside, where you needed to borrow games on cd's and play them without installing them on your pentium 3 cpu and 128 mb ram pc.

Edit: It's still there but mostly gone*

I will start with mine: the pointing stick:

Image ( you can always search on google) :http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0a/Mouse_pointing_stick.jpeg

I didn't mind using it instead of a mouse, furthermore if the ergonomy was good, it was perfectly confortable.

There is a little learning curve, that most non-techies couldnt handle just like they cant handle plugging the Ethernet cable. So it disappeared form the market in favor of the touch pad that I try to replace with a mice like a big deal.

(doing circles with it, faster, bigger, slower was very fast learning. It allowed the brain to establish understanding of the pointing behaviour along with acceleration and all that).

Someone says they still exist but I haven't seen them materially for over a decade.

Removable batteries. Blame those who can't live with a phone or whatever else that's just 1mm thicker. Because, you know, it wouldn't fit in their pockets.

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.

CircuitCity

LOL, just kidding, they were just as bad, if not worse than Best Buy.

EDIT: When they were closing down my family bought a 42" Philips 1080i lcd tv on the cheap. This was back when all the tvs were standard 720p on most medium end devices. It is still the only tv to date which I have ever seen a dvi port on, along with a serial port for automating it with a surround receiver.

We have a Panasonic 46" in our living room, which takes a 1080p signal and downscales it to 720p. Honestly at normal viewing distance I can't tell the difference between native 1080p and downscaled for increased sharpness.

Ye that because you don't sit close to it like I do when I use a keyword and mouse that is 30 to 50 centimeters. So stop with this 720 vs 1080 coz 1.1million pixels is a huge difference.

Never said 720p was better than 1080p. My post said that I couldn't tell the difference at my particular viewing distance, about 8-9 feet away from the tv.

And yes I feel your pain about back-lit lcd. I still have a Samsung syncmaster crt, but I can't stand viewing the flicker effect near the edges of the screen. Even at higher refresh rates, I get nauseous after 15 minutes. Last year I gifted myself a Asus PA246 because it was one of the better 16:10 aspect ratio monitors, and honestly the back light on it is perfect.

pffft I still got my 560 ti, still rocking them 1080p 60fps games.

Damn, compare that with gaming on a GT610 at 60 FPS. So smooth.

jk It is to terrible I can't stand it.
