What's "too" early to start teaching your kids to build a computer

Bodo88

Eh, 5 is a good age to start.

Computer building is basically Lego for grown ups. So if you have older parts that you can use to teach them, it's great.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

Considering I figured it out with no english skills, barely google and dial up internet at the age of 10 I'd say it's as good a time as any. It's basically just legos.

Honestly building a PC isn't even that important a skill to learn. Using one is.

you havnt seen some of the dopey things i have seen that could have been prevented. Worst one was a flatmate that gave her entire laptop to the landfil because she did not want to sell it with her accounting information on it. She doesn't know the landfill sells all electronics they recieve in their shop. She also wouldnt know what a hard drive is. Some people in NZ name their whole computer the hard drive.

I wouldn't say there's too early of an age, but I would say one should monitor how much time they spend on the PC. There's a whole world out there kids miss out on because they're at home glued to a screen.

And all that could be prevented if she knew how computers worked at a basic level. The difference between software and hardware. And that knowledge doesn't come from learning how to install a video card.

You'd be surprised at how many programmers and computer scientists have never built a PC. I'm sure they could figure it out with little effort. But like I said it is not an important skill in the grand scheme.

If you want your kids to be interested in computers try some of the programming apps made for kids.

I hope my high school's IT department is friendly and recognizes that I am not like the masses.

Guess I'll find out next semester (we are doing a hybrid model so I will be in school 2 days a week).

Also, cool!
Just don't let them near any LGA sockets :)

BTW don't get angry when they start tearing things apart. Get ready for an unscrewed toaster in the morning.

I used to actually do that when I was a kid me and my brother used to take apart the TV's the appliances in the kitchen and the VCR's just so we could figure out how they worked

Or the monitor is the PC, I had a lot of people at school think that

That one I can see as AIOs Desktops are almost commonplace. In fact many early Personal Computers were AIOs. Such as the Commodore PET, The first Mac, and the Datapoint 2200. That was a Smart Terminal could be use as PC.

They are teaching Calculus in 2nd Grade now? Is that at least a High School Subject? I mean that what was it considered as way back when I growing up.

I love teaching high level maths to interested youngsters. My high school teacher's kindergartner was good at addition so I taught him how to multiply and gave him a little multiplication table toy.

Whenever you get the chance, teach your kids anything their school isn't teaching them! one more thing to be proud of them for. I think it coincides with computer skills very nicely, get the kids to use safe internet browsing habits (maybe with some parental locks) and they can explore their interests so quickly.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I really agree with this. It seems that parents believe that Schools should teach the Facts of Life....
