What's wrong with [open] software encryption on a microsd card, for example? If you remember the password, and can take out the card and place in into another phone, then you can recover it. Instead, buyers lock themselves out by buying hardware with T2 chips. Most of them actually do not know and do not care about encryption. I wonder if encryption chip was optional for an extra payment, how many would still purchase it.

The video shows the complicated systems of those encryption chips, how difficult it is to recover data, like it were the way it should be. I still believe that the reason for this type of hardware complication is preventing the repairs, buying new gadgets and so on.

yep. That video is some next level shilling. Sorry this is pure unreflected advertising for Drive Savers.

Which is the reason why there is this. Literally everything that was mentioned in the video can be done by either Rossmann, Jessa (ipad rehab, video above) or both - at a fraction of the price. Jessa has videos about even the hardest recovery methods (full chip swap).

I just had an interesting conversation with their rep. I called them if they could pull the data off a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge plus. The phone is dead in that it won't power on anymore because the battery inside is bulging... to the point where the back has come off and you can see inside the phone.

Since the device itself is intact with no damage other than the battery it would be perfectly recoverable with just a battery swap. Unfortunately these guys won't do a battery swap, even if you offer to send in a replacement battery. Of course that's easy for them to say when they can milk you $900  for their recovery service versus the $140 cost (at most) just to do a battery swap.

The problem with sending in a smartphone to Samsung is that they will wipe the phone when they do a battery swap and I don't need my data deleted. The same is true for Apple when I had the same battery problem with my old iPhone - they gave me back a working device but everything on it was gone.

This is why right to repair legislation is becoming more and more important. I shouldn't have to attempt a tricky battery swap myself when a repair shop can do it. But that same repair shop (or manufacturer) has no reason to wipe the data off a phone when the only defect is the battery. Makes you wish they went back to older phone designs with removable batteries and removable storage.

i don't really like that Linus made a video with them, i heard that the repairs can cost 900 - 2000 which is just absurd. it sounds like they are just the kind of company apple really like, because they are just as expensive as the genius bar. which just makes it more normal for people to think that a repair should actually be really expensive, even if it is just a "simple" component level repair.

it would be interesting to hear what Linus thinks about right to repair.

Exactly. Sponsored videos are generally okay but this partner was chosen poorly. Additionally, it wasn't really investigative/informative but more like an elaborate ad for them :(

So apparently this whole topic seems to interest almost no one here (people seem to like arguing about motion blur instead) which I find really sad. Anyway, for the few that still seem to care, Jessa made a video addressing the specific issue LS has also talked about in last weeks WAN show (basically saying he doesn't want to have anything to do with it and just take DS's money for the sponsored video):

Video includes a nice pinned troll comment.

There is another thread going on, which has comments by Linus, Jessa and community members:

As a neutral bystander, I personally am just waiting for a conclusion and not here to stir the pot.

To me, it seems like both parties are making valid claims at the moment.
