Just looking at the opening picture, That is not specifically an X-ray machine.  It’s a different type of device that looks similar to a type of system for fitting shoes that was later made illegal in the US long ago because it emitted too much radiation. 
 

I do remember being told once that there are countries that no longer use X-rays at all and do everything with mri because it’s both better and cheaper.  Something about the medical appliance industry in the US being a ridiculous racket.  I don’t know the details and cannot substantiate the veracity of what I was told.

It works as long as 35mm is the “gold” standard.  Calling it a “crop” factor could be misleading though.  Bigger or smaller image sizes put the focal point closer or farther away from the picture plane.  Used to be a 50mm on 35mm and a 70 or 80mm lens (I forget which.  Neither is exact I think.  Might for example be 83mm or something) would capture about the same angle of view.
