3070 or 3080 for 1440p?

Haak

What card do you think matches 1440p gaming best keeping 100+fps on high settings? At the moment the 3070 seems like a more than capable card and thus making the 3080 overkill for anything less that 4k unless you want very high fps. However people who buy these cards is likely to keep them for at least 2-4 years. This gives developers time to make more demanding games. And with the new hardware that is coming out i guess they will, simply because they can. So i guess my question really is: do you think a 3070 will be able to run modern titles at 1440p 100+ fps high settings for at least 3 years?

Wait for ampere to actually launch and check both of these card's performance, we do not know.

I will be getting the 3080 for my 1440p 144Hz monitor. But that's partly because i plan to use the full RTX suite when available in games and i also have a 4K 120Hz TV to fuel aswell.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Since, no official independent reviews have come out at this point, its hard to say.

Based on Nvidia saying that it is more powerful than a 2080ti, I would expect that; Yes it will be able to play future games at 1440p 100+ FPS

It's worth mentioning that games aren't usually optimized for the most powerful new hardware.

It's more common for a game to be optimized for the most common hardware; so that most people can enjoy/will buy a game.

That is very true, good point.

I've no doubt it'll be enough for the short term, but if you extend it 3 years, my crystal ball doesn't go that far forward. Hard to say what games of the future will bring. I'm still using a 1080Ti with 1440p display, so it should be a big step up from that already. I've had my 1080Ti just over 3 years.

Games are generally designed to be scalable within reason, so that old or low end hardware can still perform at a minimal level. If you have better hardware, you can turn it up. There will be adjustments possible in game so you can balance quality and framerate as desired.

With the information we have atm, the most demanding titles require a 3080 to maintain averages around 60fps at 4k max settings.

So for 144hz max settings 1440p i would consider the 3080 a good choice.

However thats only for the most demanding games at their absolute highest settings (without RT), i think for the average title a 3070 would be fine.

However you may want to wait, it is suspected that Nvidia have a handful of other cards hidden away to be released as / when needed to compete against AMDs performance and/or value. EG 3070 Super, 3070ti, and 3080 super / ti. And ofc we have still to find out what Big Navi brings to the table.

If you want to run it for at least 3 years you may even want the 3090

I really hope my 8600k oc'ed @ 4.6 on a prime z370-a (so pci 3.0) won't be bottlenecking this glorious 3080!

Yea, im waiting for big navi to see what they bring. Several tech tubers like Mores law is dead are suggesting that it is likely that we will get more cards between the 3070 and 3090, some with more vram and something to fill the gap between 700 and 1500 price point. However some of these cards may be nvidias hand to play as a counter to Big Navi, so its not sure we will see em if AMD does not force their hand. Still, its an interesting time!

Well considering how poor value the top en cards are, why wouldn't you just buy a 3080 and up to a 4080 when the time comes for the price of 1 3090 today. Its not like you are going to need the 3090s performance on 1440p within a year. This will save you money and give you options in the future.

This is what im afraid of, i hope they dont do that.

Nvidia was very anti consumer with the 20 series, I 'hope' they would do what they have done in the past, put new cards in at the price point of the currently announced cards and move the announced cards down in price.

EG 700 series

780 $650 release price

780ti release price $700

780 post 780ti release, $500

So i would rather they conform to the last 2 decades of releases and do the following......

The 3080ti for $700, and drop the 3080 down to $600.

The 3070ti for $500 , and drop the 3070 down to $400.

Anything above ~$700 for a consumer gaming card is unacceptable and is a complete break from 2 decades of pricing.
