My sister just got her driver's license...... she got it driving her best friend's Toyota iQ automatic ,

Isn't that considered cheating?

How can anyone fail parallel parking that car? It's freaking tiny.

It's like an unfair advantage.

You'd be surprised how bad some people are at parallel parking.

I wouldn't worry about it. Be nice to your sister. You might want her to drive you somewhere.

If that's true, I'm getting my license in her aygo in 3yrs and I'm asking her to teach me to drive in it too.

With all the tech in cars these days, that's pretty normal.

Then again, I've seen people STILL changes lanes INTO people, even though the car's sensors / warnings are bleeping at them.

So...you buy the car with the extra options...but don't use...them...?

I can turn on the all the tech on my car (e.g. adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure assist, etc) ... and the car can basically drive 75% of itself.

Basically no foot on the pedals, and touch the steering wheel every like 30 seconds...

Actual human intervention when changing lanes or turning LOL

Maybe I'm already "Old Gen" ... habit of using the mirrors when reverse parking / parallel parking, even with cameras and/or sensors.

(Then again, I've got like $600 per/wheel forged wheels on my car 😶)

Entirely depends on where one lives. Here in Finland, if you e.g. get your driver's license by driving an automatic transmission, you don't have a license to drive manual and will need to go back to extend your license before you're legally allowed to drive such. This is to say, the easier the car you're driving to learn with, the more restricted the license you get and need to go back to the drawing-board, if you ever want to change to a less easy car -- IMHO, a very good and sensible law.

Every driving test I've see was with a small car, which is also what someone who just got a driver's license is likely to use. A car is a car, larger cars are a bit harder to park but if you get the mechanism it's not a major difference.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Just to be clear, your point is about the car being small, not automatic? In my case the requirement is to parallel park in the space that's 1.5x car's length, regardless if it's 3m or 6m long, this is not cheating and if you think she had more than 1.5x her car's size, it'd be examiner's choice.

From my experience bigger cars I drove were relatively more agile, to make up for the size they were able to turn the wheels further, so it's conceivable that a smaller car will be tougher to park in a space 1.5 its size.

Are we talking about the US? Because in Germany, when you make a regular drivers licence, you can be lucky to carry even a trailer behind your car with the current drivers licences. If it is as old as the one my father has, you'll also be allowed to drive vehicles like the one you posted, but that is the absolute maximum. But what is technically unfair is the fact that you are allowed to supposedly use "every assistant that your car uses" during the practical driving exam, including active parking assistants.

Looks like the van I posted was just a bit too big (for the regulations on a 'normal car license' where I live), so it's more like this sort of van I guess:

image.png.4f54e5a9831eebccd461b50df607d47e.png

Which is of course not at all the same as a (small) car, but you can still drive this, after doing an exam in a (tiny) car.

The rule is: under 3500KG (including 'max allowed carry weight' of the vehicle) and 8 or people or under (excluding the driver) place in vehicle.

6 minutes ago, Benji said:

Where I live, with a normal car driver's license you can drive with a trailer as long as:

- The trailer is less than 750KG (including carry weight)

AND

- The car + trailer are under 3500KG (including carry weight).

Otherwise you need an upgraded variant of the license.

But that still means you're allowed to drive basically any trailer or a small caravan (with a normal-ish car), when you NEVER learn to do this in your drivers exam.

When I was doing my driver's exam, I was indeed allowed to use any and all assistants (which means side mirrors that can point down and a camera in the back), because otherwise they would need to turn off these features or give a driver's license that only permits the use of a car with these features (just like how there is a manual/automatic transmission license).

That is less practical though.. But I do understand what you mean.

What an odd thread.

No, taking a small car to a drivers exam isn't "cheating" - especially if the driver owns and/or drives said small car on a regular basis.

Yes, small cars are typically easier to drive in, in particular maneuvering in tight spaces. Yes parallel parking in a larger car is more difficult.

But who exactly gets to decide what size of car you should take the test in? A Honda Civic? Bigger than her car, yes, but still considered quite small. A Camry? Bigger again, but no land boat.

How about a full size Ford Expedition or a Navigator or something?

Should we force everyone to take the test in a Cargo Van with no rear windows?

You sound... I don't know - jealous, maybe?

Why do you even care that she took the test in a small car? Do you think she's a bad driver?
