The Yongnuo YN450M is an android device with a camera but instead of being a smartphone with a camera, it's more like a camera with a phone. But does it take better pictures than an iPhone or Pixel 4?

Seems like the main issue this camera/phone is having is that its way too cheap... (Being around 300 USD isn't a lot of money to be fair.)

It hasn't reached that "sweet spot" where they don't need to price cut everything both left and right.

 

If it for an example had the performance of a 400 USD phone, and also took pictures/video like a 600 USD camera, then it wouldn't be unfair to pay 1000-1100 USD for it. Considering that its all integrated into one package. But then it needs to have the performance of course.

 

So the real question is, does it perform like what we would expect for something price comparable? (Ie, sub 100 USD phone + roughly 200-250 USD camera...)

it gets stomped by any canon DLSR you can often find used ones for 200-300 and new ones start at 400$

I'll grab some from my canon T5 and then canon SL2. (T5 is very similar to the new T6, SL2 is close to an 80D)

Yes, I will have to agree that even for a similar price, it isn't an all that good camera...

Though, I also largerly suspect that at "around 300 USD" it is too cheap, leaving the manufacturer little option than to cost cut everything.
In product manufacturing there is a "minimum cost" for just making a product, regardless of product quality. (Typically dictated by part count and complexity, and how the individual pieces are manufactured and assembled, etc.)
Everything above that "minimum cost" can add to the product quality. (or be wasted on stuff that doesn't matter...)
This is obviously an oversimplification, but a rough explanation to why a product that cost 50% more can be twice as good.

If the camera/phone costed lets say a round 1000 USD, then the manufacturer would have more breathing room towards making the product good, instead of cheap. (Though, at the same time, even then, we shouldn't compare it to a 1000 USD camera, since it also contains a phone.)

I thought of this exact idea a while back and wondered "why has nobody done this, it seems like a good idea". If this was done by a better brand, I can definitely see it being a great product.

yup. I remember the K Zoom and the other similar Galaxy devices. 

 

my dad had the predecessor , S4 Zoom.

I still looking for some product who fit my need. I want to stream directly from some conference.

Maybe use that as a Handheld Livestreaming Device to walk around and catch some Interviews and get mixed them the main Live Stream.

Or upload the Picture instantly on my Server to sell them. I would say the Time where Journalist drive with there Analogue Cam in there Studio and sent the Picture out by a Courier are over now. Today very thing must going faster.

 

Another think who could be nice and handy are when the Output of the Cam can be use the same as on a "normal" Phone!

Why? To run some Special Android Software on for Machine Learning, put them on Scope, use Optical Tracking together with HW Gears to follow objects,...

This just proves that there is a market out there. People laugh at Sony for a having low sales figures, but the Xperia 1 II is just a more refined version of this device (plus it can make calls unlike this thing ). I'm so happy that other companies are taking this manual camera first mentality, some of the other bigger brands need to take note.

if you were trying to do that a backpack with a laptop using a capture card from a camera is the way to go.

it isn't good enough for that

you can go from camera to phone/laptop then to a server easily.

 

I don't view it as useful for any of that.

Samsung did, 8 years ago. It's called the Galaxy Camera.

I'm honestly surprised no one mentioned it in the video, or any of its other variants and successors.

I guess in the end Samsung photography never really took off like Sony did. It's there but it's not the best.

Would be fun to see you guys go crazy with this to see how good of an image you can make it get, size be damned. Stick an EF-M43 speedbooster on it with a sigma 18-35 and BLAM!

It is possible issues with stills could be corrected with a revised processing build, powered by Machine Learning.

 

Via an algorithm, the camera would take several pictures at different exposures, before consolidating a stack into a final composite. This would thus overcome the need for 3rd-party ND filters, and likely clean up its odd prediliction of adding chroma to an image when none is needed.

 

At the same time, each exposure could calibrate the sharpness ratios for different ranges, thus optimising the composite's edge details.
