I think x 86 is getting overloaded

and there will be a time where we all might game on ARM or RISC V CPUs

the reason intel ( and AMD ) still has basically a PC and Server monopoly is that people are too lazy to port everything to a better architecture

but U can understand this laziness

still though i dont think for a moment that amd and intel wont jump on to whatever is next, their design and manufacturing abilities wont disappear over night.

specially amd that already made arm cpus in the past.

the next decade will be quite a ride

Who's gonna port ALL the games and programs' No one. It's impossible. Especially since some companies and developers don't even exist anymore, but tools are still in use. x86 may be "old", but it's very mature and has insane app selection. Basically whatever you think of, it' probably exists. If you go radical and just move all of it to ARM, you create a big problem. Coz any platform, be it desktop, laptop or smartphone, hell, even browsers with extensions, if you don't have enough apps or extensions, it'll crash and burn. It happened so many times before. Doing so could kill entire ecosystem basically over night.

Agreed. The closest we might see is Apple moving MacBooks to ARM but even then, it's not because ARM is more powerful but rather ARM won't cook itself in their designs.

Theoretically if MS was willing to put in the effort, they could do what Apple did with OSX and the transition from PowerPC to x86, and have a compatibility layer to enable older apps to run. I know we're sort of seeing that already, but it isn't as far along from what I understand.

At some point just improving the node won’t help you can’t go smaller than an atom

but maybe then we won’t switch from x86 to arm but from silicon to Quants

Or switching to silicon carbide dies that can withstand much higher temperatures...

...on the other hand suddenly your PC becomes a fire hazard :P

I think that's a symptom of a problem rather than people just not wanting good battery life

Well, I meant it more like, Some people buy a laptop, but still use it like a desktop, plugged in and on a desk. It doesn't make sense to me when people say they don't have space for a desktop PC... you could have it set up beside your TV and a wireless keyb/mouse FFS! or on a small desk same as your laptop.

Not people in coffee shops, charging them whilst using them. For people actually using them in the usual manner, yes battery life is very important.

I blew a motherboard's VRM with just a Pentium 4 630 - the D are twice as bad for power+heat.
