Will component prices and availability improve soon?

Hi guys. I've been itching to build a new Ryzen desktop recently. I already have storage and a GPU, but I need everything else.

However when looking around online, I've been finding tons of stuff either completely out of stock or with a significantly inflated price. My local Microcenter has a tiny selection of cases and PSUs, some mobos and ram are out of stock basically everywhere, and the 1600AF is nowhere to be found below like $150 US.

In addition, the B550 and XT launches might lower prices on older stuff(?).

Do you guys think the covid-related price hikes and shortages will end anytime soon, and will any prices go down after the B550 and Ryzen XT launches? I need to do this before August at the latest, should I just go for it?

Thanks!

Availability is not going to be better for about a month for GPU, PSU and Motherboards, realistically probably not until end of july.

Hmm, can the same be said for pricing? What is this based on?

Supply and demand most likely. There is not enough supply and too much demand.

Damn, guess I'll either have to bite the bullet on bad prices or wait months. I'm tempted to just build an ebay Xeon system or something instead...

Makes sense, I'm more curious about the exact time frames

You could just use eBay to get components for a new Ryzen build. For example, there are plenty of B450 motherboards and PSUs for sale on it. eBay.

RAM wise, I know the following will overclock to 3200MHz with 18-21-21-39 timings at 1.2V:

AM4 motherboards will happily use ECC RAM and the ones that actually turn on the ECC function can use it to make your machine more reliable. Watching for memory error reports can be useful when overclocking RAM.

As long as you are not picky, you could use anything as a case including a used ATX PC’s case.

Thanks for the info! Could you link that RAM kit again? Just takes me to the amazon account page.

I'd rather not order stuff online if I can help it, but if things don't change before the end of July I'll probably go this route.

idk its only 2400mhz and more expensive than 3600mhz ram

I recall that in the past, ECC and non-ECC were around parity. It does not seem to be the case anymore. The prices of everything are rising.

Anyway, that RAM uses the fairly popular Micron E-die chips that are known to overclock fairly well with tight timings. I paid $86 per stick of it last year before Kingston did a product change notification saying that it was switching to 3200MHz grade Micron E die chips from the 2400/2666MHz ones previously used:

https://media.kingston.com/pcn/PCN_KSM24ED8_16ME_C1.pdf

As I wrote on reddit, they went to 3200MHz without a problem, despite having an inferior grade of E-die chip:

There are cheaper options on the market, but I don't know what dies are used in them. In my case, I only want ECC RAM for reliability, so I did not have better choices. Having ECC made overclocking the memory easier because the memory literally could tell me when something was wrong rather than letting me discover something was wrong by letting the system continue to operate like that. :)
