⚠️ A NEW FOE HAS APPEARED ⚠️ - Honeywell claims it has the most powerful quantum computer

Why is that a surprise?

Honeywell's primary business is as a software and computer/electrical hardware provider mostly to the military, but also to aerospace and commercial industry at large. They are in the same space as Rockwell-Collins and Raytheon.

Because to me, Honeywell makes shitty dehumidifier, fans and other shit like that, which breaks within 6 months to a year from personal experience. They aren't what I associate with "quality". I had no clue they were in aerospace or military. Like most people who didn't actually look them up to find out that stuff. I don't believe it's common knowledge that they are into this other stuff.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

For what it’s worth some Honeywell pollen air filters are stupendously fantastic.  Specifically their full height ring models (if they still even make them of course)

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Oh. I'm in the reverse position. I had no idea they made the consumer stuff, until this post actually, and only knew about the military/industrial stuff. I guess I'm weird, but I am the kind to hang out on tech forums arguing about government spying and esoteric programming issues after all.

There's no reason it shouldn't be common knowledge, if you type in Honeywell.com you get their landing page with absolutely zero links to their consumer products, at least that I could find.

Who actually goes on manufacturer websites when looking up a product they want?

As a consumer, I'd visit stores or review sites.

It would be like visiting Nestle's website when looking up crappy chocolates instead of Amazon.

Not to mention, manufacturer websites these days are usually just a glorified pat their back to show what they have accomplished/done instead of a showcase of their products. Often with just a link to third party stores if you want to see their products, if at all. So I'd argue that few people do go on those websites other than the ones who genuinely want to learn more about X company.

Also, even assuming that I was looking for Honeywell's website... and didn't know they were in aerospace or other sectors, I'd assume that honeywell.com was just a different Honeywell, since multiple companies can have the same name as long as they aren't in the same business. Then I would find honeywellhome.com and figure that "oh hey that's what I was looking for".

I'd say that you not knowing they were in the consumer market is the strange thing here... But I guess that's the thing with "common knowledge". What's "common" to one person might be completely foreign to another.

I don't know where they got that from. Honeywell is similar to Raytheon in terms of it being a general military and government technology contractor.

Here's a short list of Honeywell product interests:

  • Small military Drones
  • Military and Commercial Flight Hardware, including FMCs
  • Weather Radars
  • Targeting Radars
  • Space craft on board GNC equipment
  • Bendix King general aviation equipment
  • Radiation hardened microprocessors
  • GNSS satellite MIMS systems
  • Military Helicopter Engines
  • Military Bomb and Missile Racks
  • Aircraft Auxiliary Power Units
  • A plethora of switches, joysticks, and sensors for general commercial, industrial, military, or spaceflight use

Honeywell is actually a software and computer hardware provider for the government and big industry at large. Honeywell Aerospace, Honeywell Defense, and BendixKing are their primary subsidiaries. Honeywells main competitors are Raytheon and Rockwell-Collins.

Uhm since Honeywell made the most iconic thermostat most of us grew up with?

I mean you did have to look up that list via google, it's not THAT well known.

I was the same. I was blown away when I went on holidays to another country and saw a Honeywell air conditioner, they have no retail presence in some countries.

Let's be honest, it'll be made of horrid plastic, unable to keep time, setup once and be too scared / confused as to how to reset it, and end up using the manual controls anyways!

Raytheon is still producing 8086s that are identical in package format, electrical characteristics, and functionality to the original Intel 8086. They cost about $10,000 a unit, and are radiation hardened. I'm not 100% sure what they are for, but judging by the time frames of production and the fact that they are still producing them I'm reasonably sure it's some part of the nuclear triad that relies on them: Pretty much everything else has been updated by now.

Now that is a lot cooler piece of trivia than "Honeywell makes a good thermostat and a poorly rated dehumidifier". In fact, neither the Wikipedia page nor Honeywells homepage even mentions consumer climate control appliances.

Why would I spend any time researching home thermostats when I can research that kind of stuff?

Honeywell is a Fortune 100 technology company that primarily specializes in military and aerospace applications. That's what you get when you Google "Honeywell". Or atleast it used to be, I'm sure that the results are filled with memes and quantum computers by now.

I'd assume they use those for ICBM's and possibly for defense contracts for satellites or something similar.

That's... quite simply false:

Hell, when you open the Wiki page on Thermostats, it's literally a picture of the Honeywell round thermostat:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermostat

Now, obviously, some countries might have a smaller presence, so not everyone is going to be familiar with them, but the vast majority of regular people are going to be familiar with Honeywell because of Thermostats and similar heating/cooling technology.
