Sufficient GPU for 1440p/165Hz

Aleksbgbg

Could anyone link me to a thread or guide on the web that mentions which GPUs are good for which monitor/refresh rate ranges?

I'm looking for a GPU that will fit 1440p/165Hz without overkilling it, but a list of all the common denominations would be nice to see. I couldn't find one personally.

RTX 2070 Super or the RX 5700XT are likely what you'd call sufficient 1440p/165hz GPUs.

Depends on a game and what settings you want to use.

Something like a RTX 2070 Super or Radeon RX 5700 XT are a good start.

GTX 1080 or 1080ti if you can grab used for cheaper.

Really depends on what you want to play at that resolution and refresh rate. My 1080 Ti can't play some titles at 1440p/144Hz, but mostly because they're bad titles or too visually intensive.

A 5700 XT / 2700 Super would work well. A 2080 Super is a poor value but does it slightly better. A 2080 Ti would do it the best, of course.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

I see a lot of people asking for what I would play. Let's imagine ultra settings on RDR2, however I'm asking in general, on high/ultra settings, for any given title.

Any given title is too broad.  It's like saying what motor to make a car do 200mph.  Depends a lot on the car, no?

WoW is much easier to run than RDR2 or Witcher and different than Minecraft or CS:GO or Fortnite.

But to run all the games at High/Ultra at 1440p/165Hz I'd say you'd need a 2080Ti.

Here's Tomb Raider at 1440p trying for high refresh with a 1080Ti....

Problem is, games usually suck.

That's why people ask what do you play, but if someone play something else than an online game, like me, that's mean title will change a lot.

I have a 2070 super on a 1080p, it's just a waste of money for some title, since i go over my refresh rate (144hz) but in some other title it was a real improvement from a rx580, but the game are made with the a** and fps sometime just drop with no real reason, i.e. far cry new dawn it goes up 120-130 fps in some moments, and drop (just peak) at 50 sometime, and this is not when 2000 foe are on the screen making explosion or some wonderfull but heavy gpu workload, but just running around with a car like it was a rally game, and keep in mind that my cpu neither my gpu go 100% utilization, that's mean my pc have more power to avoid fps drop, but the game engine is not really able to do it.

Throwing my 2 cent i just can say if you play 2-3 games i mean you play always the same game, ask for them to know what they can squeeze, otherwise go for what your budget can afford

It's more so that if you want to play esports titles and plan on playing more competitively, you could probably settle for a Radeon 5700 or RTX 2060 Super, but if you want to play something far more visually intensive, you have to go as high end as what's on the market to get the best results.

I was shocked at what it takes to drive 1440p at 165hz.  When I first built my system I went with a 1080 because I didn't think I'd need the power of the 1080TI to drive 1440p.  I was wrong.  I've since upgraded to the 2080TI and hit 165fps consistently with ultra graphics.

Depends on the game mostly. There’s plenty of games where my RTX 2080 Super is fast enough, but also plenty of games where I’d need RTX 2080Ti to reach around 144 FPS, and even games where that wouldn’t be enough. Basically, you can never have enough GPU horsepower for every game so look at what you’re playing and what you’re willing to spend.
