Yahoo! decadence continues~

American web services provider Yahoo is officially shutting down its Groups website. According to a post by the company, services for uploading new content will be discontinued on October 28, and all previous content posted on the website will be deleted on December 14, meaning you’ll have until then to download and save any history you have on the site.

 

For those unaware, launched in 2001, Yahoo Groups was one of the Internet’s largest collections of online discussion boards. At its peak in 2008, the service recorded 113 million users across 9 million Groups. Unfortunately for Yahoo, the rise of social media platforms such as Reddit and Facebook has largely made the service redundant, leading to the ultimate shut-down coming in December.

 

Remember when Yahoo! turned down a deal to purchase Google for mere 1 million dollars? Jokes aside Yahoo! the formerly tech giant has been facing multiple issues for years and now it does feel the bottom of the barrel as they no longer have the resources to maintain their oldest websites online or even store all the data from it any more.

 

Will Yahoo! end up being purchase by a different company? They still have worthy intellectual property even if their structure and brand are far from as meaningful as they were in the past, one way or another we're heading to a world where Yahoo! might no longer be part of.

If I'm not mistaken, Verizon purchased Yahoo! just over two years ago.
