Best bang for your buck GPU for gaming

So currently planning a build which is another thing in itself. But I have a quick question I'm hoping yall can help me with. With the announcement of the new Nvidia graphics cards planned for a release in june or earlier which is at most 9 months out. I personally think it would be silly for me to buy a top tier graphics card until they release as 20 series prices may go down. So I am simply looking for the most bang for my buck GPU that can play games at 1080p at 144hz and possibly utilize some 1440p but its not a major deal as I am planning to upgrade whenever the release happens. 

Sorry for the drawn out paragraph. What do you think would be the best bang for your buck that'll get me to that point?

Depends either from aftermarket or new.

GTX 1070 aftermarket prices are sometimes good.

 

RX580/570/480 though are cheaper.

Rx 570, at 130$ its a steal, can play 1080p 144fps with medium-low settings on AAA games, or with high-max settings on esports game

for 1080p 144hz with higher settings, you're going to have to get something like a rx 5700. the blower at 330$ isn't too loud, with an undervolt it should be fine.

Used market you can get a 980 ti for 150-180$ ish

The RTX 570 can barely hit 60 FPS at 1080p in a lot of modern games.

 

I would say say you need to go with at least a 1660ti for 1080 144hz in modern games, but preferably a 2060 or 5700 if you want to go up to 1440p.

Uh no. 980 is like 1060 6GB level IIRC, it's the 980 Ti that competes with the 1070.

dude the 980 comes short of the 1070, even the 980 ti is slightly weaker. The 980 is like a 1060 6gb

Yeah, if you turn up MSAA to like 16x. I played DMC5 (a AAA game) at 60-75fps with most settings at maximum. However, theres basically no difference from high to max, except that you get 50% more fps

Ditto on this. 

 

If it were me, I'd nab a RX 5700 with a dual BIOS switch, and flash it with a XT BIOS. Should basically double the average relative performance of a RX 570 at that point. I realize most people wont tinker like I do, but I'm willing to put in the effort for that sweet bang-for-buck.

It really depends on the game, on the card, on the settings, on the clocks, on so much that there's no such thing as absolute truth... better is to just say the 1070 and 980 Ti are comparable and leave at that.

I own an RX 480. I've been playing on 1920x1200 until recently, upgraded to 1440p now. I can (mostly) hit 60 fps with medium to high settings in games. With the possible exception of Doom, I'd say 144 fps isn't really doable unless you turn down settings by a lot.

Really you could do well with a rx 590 wth a 150-220mhz overclock depending on which manufacture you get. You could find one on the used market for around 180-200 dollars. I myself use a 570 but with high settings and the antialiasing settings/shadows keeps the card averaged at 60fps on modern games.

So I just got back from work and have done some research the two most tempting to me are the 980 ti and the 1070.. is it worth saving the extra money to get the 980 ti or should i get the 1070 seeing as they seem to be the same and sometimes the 980 ti beats the 1070...

980 Ti most often beats 1070 in power consumption.

Beats ~ consumes more.
