Is Samsung lying ?? (SSD related)

Hello ! I came across a specific details that bothers me and I wonder if you guys could answer my question (for the purpose of the topic, we will only talk about the SSD 860 series)

Samsung on their web site (specs section) advertise their SSD's exactly like this :

QVO 860 (1TB) : Samsung V-NAND 4bit MLC

EVO 860 (1TB) : Samsung V-NAND 3bit MLC

PRO 860 (1TB) : Samsung V-NAND 2bit MLC

 

The problem is that fundamentally if a cell has 2bits it's a MLC, if it has 3bits it's a TLC and if it has 4bits it's a QLC.

This is my question: Why does Samsung keep advertising their SSD's as MLC if they are not ?? Is it partially true at a certain extent (maybe if it's just 20, 40, 60, 80 or even 100% true) or it's just marketing bullshit for sales ?

because M in MLC means multi. Technically any number that's not 0 or 1 fits the name, it's just of tradition that MLC means 2 bit cells. They did specify bits per cell here so it's not wrong.

MLC just means multi-leveled so TLC and QLC are still technically MLC

Yes, it is misleading, they should have gone with TLC and QLC respectively instead of this 3bit MLC / 4bit MLC... but it's not like any one cares, it's Samsung they can get away with it specially as there is no specific rules in nomenclature and any one can argue it's all "MLC"

You can call it marketing since everyone else stick to SLC MLC TLC QLC naming scheme

because MLC is any nand flash with more than 1 layer. 

 

technically speaking, its not wrong to call 2 layer MLC. its more descriptive term would be DLC

Yes, Samsung did that naming scheme with the intention of lying and decept... Technically you could say the "purpose" is to lie, but the courts will not accept that, it technically is a "right" label
