Please recommend a very quiet 750W

GreenSmoke

Please recommend a very quiet 750W power supply for order in the US.

If I can get it under $130, great.  I will pay more if I have to for very quiet/silent.

Thanks.

All PSU's are quiet if they have no load, but your question pre-supposes a larger load, but ironically you are silent on what that larger (louder) noise is...

i use the EVGA G2 750W PSU and it's very quiet...in fact it's silent i never was able to hear anything coming from it.

Extremely high quality PSU...with the prices right now i would go with this unit which is even better:

Probably because you don,t have a high load on it , EVGA G2 and G3 are known to get very noisy at loads close to their rated wattage... the fans used are not so good

And it is not known whether the G2 has workingOTP on it or not , supposedly it was added to the fan controller by super flower on their leadex model but unkown whether EVGA would have implemented the same change...

The PSUs you are looking for are most likely BeQuiet or Bitfenix Whisper M

Well ok, a bit more backstory then.  I have a PS already.  It seems to be on or off though, there is no ramp up of fan speed.  It just turns on and is a jet engine for about 5 mins, then its off for 15 mins.  I went with a 1kW supply thinking I would be well under the load and it would never turn on.  I have ECO on but I have tried on and off.  Off is just worse.

This is what I have so far, including the PS which seems to be very loud.  My estimated wattage is 354W on PCpartPicker.

Big rip. This is why you lookup tests, or simply shop for a quiet PSU if you want a quiet PSU - not for a high wattage one. But that's easy to say in hindsight isn't it!

PCPartPicker estimates your power consumption is 354W, but your entire PC actually never goes over even 250W.

A high quality and quiet 450W or 550W PSU would be ideal for your setup.

Good choices for you include Corsair RM550, Corsair RM550x, or BitFenix Whisper M 550.

Example fan noise at 36-48 degrees Celsius for RM550x: image.png.45ce90b6f2735eb8cdca0d5feabdf7a7.png

Money aside (ok, $250 max?), what is the quietest recommendation?

I find it very hard to find any sort of comparison on noise.  The only way to learn about the noise is 1 by 1 research.

I don't find it very hard - there is a comparison of noise on every review on Tom's Hardware:

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-rm650-power-supply,6187-5.html

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/be-quiet-system-power-u9-500w-psu,6035-5.html

And TechPowerUP:

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/super-flower-leadex-iii-650-w/6.html

And there's also detailed noise data for hundreds of PSUs at Cybenetics, including a "dumbed-down" average noise column:

https://www.cybenetics.com/index.php?option=database&manfID=28&volts=1

What research have you been doing? Maybe you visited the wrong websites? That would be understandable - oddly enough, many people are unaware that TechPowerUP and Tom's Hardware have the best power supply reviews on the internet by far.

Seems like Corsair RM550x, since it will stay fanless at your 200-230W load, and there is no more expensive power supply that would stay... silenter. And higher power units will only be louder.

For example, compare the noise of RM550x and Seasonic Prime Ultra 850W Titanium from Cybenetics at different output power:

Good replies man, thanks.

I found somewhere that people were taling about the RMx line replacing a good fan with a crappier fan though.  I cant find it again to quote it.  Do you know anything about that or is it just not worth worrying about?  I do really want quiet :)

The cybenetics link you shared has a post 2018 RM550X that is louder than the previous version, so that would seem to agree.

I have also read about replacing the PSU fan myself with a high quality fan.  I would consider that an option but am interested in your 2 cents on that.  I would not do this without judging the fan at stock.  A caution to the future reader, don't consider this if you don't know the dangers of disassembling a PSU.

I downloaded a noise meter so if anyone wants metrics.

I am currently getting 34db @ 30cm distance with the PSU fan running and that is way too loud.

When the PSU turns off, the idle PC is 28db @ 30cm.

Likely that it was about the 2019 RM using a worse fan than the RMx. I think it was the same Hong Hua fan as Seasonic uses on the Prime. Not great.

Those that replace the fan on a brand new PSU are retarded. I recommend not being retarded.

Thread's pretty done by now but an alternative to the RM550x (2018) that I would deem worthy of mention is the beQuiet! Straight Power 11 550W as well.

PSU makers designed the PSU with a fan that rotates at certain RPM and moves enough air to provide it with sufficient airflow.

People who replace the fan with slower ones, which move less air, rob the PSU of the airflow it needs and understandably that's bad for it. And they also lose the warranty, 10 years in case of RMx.

Go ahead and browse through Cybenetics database, paying attention to both the load table, and the colorful noise graph a few pages above. Keep in mind the colorful noise graph tests are done in lower temperatures that the load tests, and that IMO the noise of your PSU at 550W doesn't matter if it will consume 230W at most.

Ultimately, you can consider Seasonic Prime Titanium Fanless 600W, it has no fan at all.
