The University of Utah has developed an prosthetic arm capable of sending feelings of touch back to the user. Users can reported determine up to 119 perceptions from pressure to vibration.

He could identify and handle objects faster and more accurately than with any other system of this kind. The 14-month study published in Science Robotics builds upon previous work demonstrating the potential of biologically inspired sensory feedback systems to restore natural “feeling” in the phantom hands of amputees. “We changed the way we are sending that information to the brain so that it matches the human body....And by matching the human body, we were able to see improved benefits. We are making more biologically realistic signals.” The work has so far only involved amputees who lost arms below the elbow, where the muscles to move the hand are located, but it could also be adapted. He hopes by next year three test subjects will be able to take the arm home to use, pending government approval.

 

My Thoughts:

We're getting closer and closer to being able to mimic our body's functions nowadays. From these new prosthetics that enable sense of feel and touch, to pacemakers and fully artificial hearts. While not cheap in some countries, most first world countries should be able to afford these life extending technologies. While the psychological trauma of accidents will still exist, we are approaching the point in which damaged limbs and organs can be replaced with artificial ones with almost no loss in functionality, or even gains in functionality. Who knows how far off we are from voluntary amputation for better, artificial limbs. It may be right around the corner.

Battery tech is holding us back. My friend has a prosthetic arm, and the battery life is pretty bad. It's not impossible to manage, but it's far from perfect. I don't see anyone wanting to upgrade to a robot arm when you can only use it for 6 hours at a time.

True. At the very least quick charge technology is rapidly improving things like phones now able to charge at 40W or more.

I agree if we had better batteries we could solve a majority of the worlds problems.

is it possible to connect prosthetic arms when you already have 2? I can think of many applications where extra removable hands can be quite useful. Or is that not possible yet

It was done with monkeys a few years ago, well controlling a robotic arm following amputation. The brain is highly adaptive so it may be possible to learn to control extra appendages.
