iPhone XR

RockyRZ

I wanna but a XR but there's a lot complains about the screen on the internet. What's the best argument in favor of it?

Is it worth it despite all of the negativity behind it? Should I go for the X instead?

I would go for the X if you REALLY want an iphone, Ive always hated the XR as it seems to be the same price-ish as the X with a cut down camera and screen in the UK. But in all seriousness, just wait for the next iphone launch, its not far away imho.

What complains are there? The Xr has one of the best IPS Displays you can buy, technically a MUCH better Quality, than the most expensive IPS-Gaming Monitors available.

Honestly, every single complain about the Xr screen are from  Spec-whores, who only read a Number, and that's what the product is for them.

The overall Displayquality for those people is measured 100% only with 1 single Number on a specsheet.

And even this one thing they Fail, becaus they don't realize, that Oled ppi vs. iPS ppi are 2 entirely different things.

iPhone Xr screen is one of the best IPS screens you can buy in any smartphone right now.

And it completely beats a 1080p IPS  Screen from the Pocophone F1.

If having an Oled Panel itself is not super important for you, and you're fine with IPS, then just get the Xr. Visit a store, look it with YOUR OWN EYES, and decide for yourself if the screen is good enough for you.

Instead of taking the useless Opinion from someone for granted, who never ever touched an Xr.

Btw: 1080p Oled screens from 90% of all Android flaggships have on paper 400~ ppi. In reality, it's compareble to around 340~ ppi. Just barely sharper than the 326 ppi from the Xr. But somehow, noone complains about that.... strange, isn't it?

i'm sure, this Video will help you:

There's even the Scene included, where people blindly prefer the "low res" screen of the iPhone Xr over the 1080p Pocophone F1 screen.

And also it mentiones one thing, the Xr excells over any other iPhone: battery Life.

Why low res in quotation marks? By 2019 standards it is a low resolution screen. Doesn't mean it is the worth screen out there, but it also isn't that great.

Because it's kinda funny to see how many people literaly trash the Xr screen just because of the Number they read, while saying "pocophone costs a quarter of that, and has a better screen".

Res is a bit higher on the pocophone, but it somehow doesn't seem to make a difference. Noone of those people in this Blindtest noticed anything about the sharpness.

But they noticed the MUCH better Colors, Contrast etc etc.

Btw: I also played a bit with the Xr in the stores. And i admit, i thought worse when i read the Number. But in reality... Take it in your hand, look at it, no issues.

If you hold the Xs (Max) directly besides it, and go very close to look for differences, then you will find one.

For a normal usage (especially without direct comparison), it's perfectly fine.

And it IS fine, just because you actually do get something in return: A much higher battery life. So it's a pro/con trade, which is fine for the price difference too.

Btw: iPhone Xr has 4,54 million subpixels.

A Xiaomi Mi 8 has 4,85 million subpixels (but: 6,28" Screen, while iPhone has a smaller 6,1" Screen, so keep that in Mind).

If we don't forget the minimal different screen size, they both have almost the exact same amount of subpixels (singular color dots). So Sharpness between them is pretty much identical.

In other Words: If a 1080p Oled screen is perfectly fine with resolution, a 828p Xr screen is just as good.

I have an XR and have no issues with the screen.

Best arguments?  It's very colour-accurate and bright, and the 828p screen can actually help out by extending battery life (the iPhone XR is a long-lasting phone in general).  If you didn't mind the DPI of the iPhone 6 through 8, you won't have complaints here. The only reason you might not like it is if screen resolution is a make-or-break factor in your purchase.

I don't think there's a great deal of benefit moving well above 1080P on smartphones. Granted, graphics-heavy games can upscale, and rendering the UI at QHD and 4K isn't difficult (on the hardware), I don't much reason for it either when my eye has difficulty discerning pixels even close up. For that matter,  I hardly see aliasing in games on my phone either.

If Pentile still exists however, then 1440P is quite an understandable move.

In the context of a screen that really isn't large, the iPhone XR's screen isn't all that low resolution. Sure, there's Android phones out there with higher res screens, but all it really does in the context of this phone is make text a little sharper and games struggle more if they aren't configured to already run at lower than native resolution. I've seen the XR screen in real life and, to be blunt, the screen resolution is not an issue. Would a higher resolution be better? Maybe, but I think Apple's aim here was a compromise between sharpness, PPI and battery life.

Even comparing to my own phone's 1080P display, the Iphone XR's display is almost in an entirely different class by comparison. Considering I'm doing a fair bit of photo editing on my phone, this is a pretty big thing for me to look for. (Dynamic contrast in cheap displays like mine wreaks havok with this use case). I'll definitely be looking at the XR myself (presuming the price drops) or it's successor if finances allow for such a frivolous expenditure.

Given how close we are to September, I'd strongly recommend holding off on a purchase unless you're without a working phone now.

Virtually all android phones of the price class. I don’t know why you are trying to deny the simple reality that under full hd is low resolution. Doesn’t mean the screen looks shit

I am not saying the screen looks bad, I have the iPhone 8 which has the same pixel density and looks fine. But the point is that’s it objectively a low resolution screen and Apple’s lcds look even better with 1080p (in the iPhone 8 Plus )

People bitch about XR screen so hard because of raw pixel density to a point even I was sceptical about it coming from 1080p screens. Turns out it's all bullshit. Amazing view angles, accurate colors and resolution is so good you need to look at it from 5cm to see that curved edges aren't absolutely perfect smooth. Now, when do you look at it from 5cm distance? I've stopped caring about resolution at this point. Plus it's helpful for battery life and you get more performance in games.

The point remains, why buy the XR with a worse screen, and it is worse, even if it isnt bad, then the X can be had with a better screen and camera. In fact, in the UK, An iphone X can be had for cheaper than an XR, which seems stupid to me.

It depends on what you're looking for.

The iPhone X does have OLED and a dual camera, but the XR also has a faster chip, Smart HDR for photos (that does make a difference) and, crucially, longer battery life.

The iPhone XR has a great display. OLED is still flawed in terms of longevity so it's not that amazing of an upgrade in every regard. Also, the XR has amazing battery life, unlike the XS which is just about average.

^^. I run an iPhone X now, which is OLED. The blacks are a bit sharper than the IPS display of my iPhone 6 Plus, but the true tone stuff helps more with colors actually looking nice. There's no massive difference, certainly not worth the price increase over an XR (which wasn't out when I got my phone, RIP). A lot of the "complains about the screen on the internet" are idiots who think below 400 on paper ppi means you'll go blind looking at the screen. iPhones have had 326ppi or so screens since the iPhone 4, upped to 401 on the iPhone Plus models, IDK what it is now on the X/XS lines. Haven't seen anyone actually using one complain it was too low or not absolutely sharp af. iPads are around 240ppi if I remember right, and those look perfectly crisp at the average viewing distance. If you put your eye 1" away from the screen it looks blurry, but that's because your eyes can't focus at that range.

IDK much about the battery life side of it though, is it similar to the SE and how it beat out the flagships on that front?

The battery is about 3000 mAh on the XR, significantly bigger than even the XS Max. The 3GB of RAM I think is the biggest downside to longevity, and tbh, the biggest turn off for my as I don't want a step back on any front from my current phone.

Not to myself: Need to add a Raspberry Pi 4 to my budget if I plan to go iOS to handle emulation needs. Also need to budget for 256 GB minimum as I've already about outgrown 64 GB. :/

I tend to use my phone like my computer away from home, so the storage gets a workout. I don't have a home internet connection as well, so this eliminates cloud storage almost entirely for general purpose usage. Raw images also eat storage.

I'd argue low resolution for a phone would be something quite a bit lower than whatever the hell the iPhone XR uses (something higher than the iPhone 6/7/8's screen res, from what I remember). Although, maybe I am wrong, maybe resolution really does matter and not how it looks in real usage.

Nah you're right, resolution really doesn't matter at the point of the XR

For everyone else:
I have an XR and really it doesn't bug me the resolution is lower than 1080p, I came from an S8+ and really I don't notice the fact that the resolution is lower.
