Ryzen 3900x now or 3950x 16c in September ?

I don't even know if this is true that in Sept. AMD is releasing the 16 core Ryzen 9 for 749 USD.  I read this couple places is this true or a stupid rumor ?  Why would they delay the 16 core for 2 months instead of giving users the chance to buy it now.  Or is the 16c Ryzen 9 never going to happen and we will see nothing from AMD until a refresh in 2020.  Thanks

Likely due to the increase difficulty of getting the necessary yields.... you need two perfect batched chiplets for the 2x8c' and it coming on September is already confirmed.

 

If you feel you can put the extra 4 cores to use, wait for it.

It is confirmed for September launch.

The reason being that all good dies are going into the 3800x atm, and the 3950x needs 2x even more perfect dies for that 4.7ghz boost.

Thanks for the info Princess Luna...  Ya I mean honestly I'm being greedy, a 12 core is plenty, but I told myself long time ago I will always buy the best of that generation which means I have to wait til September I guess.

If you have a use for the extra cores, want the bragging rights or be more future proof then, provided it aint hurting miss piggy, get the 3950x I'd say.

As others said, date has been confirmed, it's a yield and availability issue.

Maybe I'm just short sighted, but why would you need so many cores? Wouldn't the 250$ could go to something more fun in your PC, like custom water-cooling?

I can't remember exactly what you use your PC for, but I do recall you saying it's productivity. Unless your current rig is hurting, I'd hang in there until September, see if the performance scales with price, then pull the trigger on one or the other.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Well my decision on how many cores to get is because I run DAW.  Sonar Platinum and its a HT app.  My current setup does fine with bunch of VSTi's open and bunch of plugins.  Honestly a 9900k would do the trick, but Im totally being greedy here.  12 core is plenty.  As I said earlier long time ago I promised myself if or when I upgrade it will be the top CPU of that generation.  So Im trying to stick to my word.  Is 250 bucks more worth it, I will probably never know cuz I will never need that many cores.  9900k is the sweet spot and a 12 core is just a monster for my DAW.  Its pure greed, but if the 16c gives a lower clock boost then I might go with 12 core.  Does anyone know about the 16c clock boost and what not ?

Oh my goodness why the fak is AMD copying Intel and calling their latest desktop CPU the worlds 1st blah blah CPU.  Man a 6 core 8700k is perfectly fine for gaming.  You dont use 32 freakin threads when gaming.  AMD is drunk so is Intel calling the 9900k a gaming CPU.  These are tactics to sell more since theres millions of gamers out there.  Its more of a CPU for HT APPS,  hardcore multithreaded apps.  Sad they call this 16 core a gaming CPU lol,, you barely need 6 core 8700k for gaming CPU and what not.

You might want to check that vid, in the middle there is a segment about boost speeds. ( it's not that straight forward )

In two months the platform should mature and the boost behavior should be better understood.

 

Personally I'm waiting for the 3950x or, hopefully, details on Threadripper 3rd gen. My X58 rig is still going strong, so I can wait.

Good luck with it boosting that high.. I've seen nothing but posts/reviews about these new CPUs barely being able to hit their max boost frequency more than a split second here and there.. 

 

It looks like AMD gave the CPUs a max boost frequency of what it can hit on one thread for a fraction of a second. Could just be early release troubles but I see quite a few problems at the moment..

If you can wait 2 more months, I would definitely wait and see how the 3950x performs. I expect that it will only be an incremental improvement in games over 3900x but the additional 4 cores will make productivity workloads scream
