[UPDATED] "Gigantic Space Battle Breaks Out in EVE Online, Thanks to Unpaid Bill" - Nearly $300,000 worth of damage and a tease from CCP

Read to understand:

Because this is EVE, the intrigue leading up to one of these rumbles is often more entertaining than the fight itself—especially when it gets so large that time itself has to slow down to account for all the ships in the area of operation. According to an email EVE Online sent out today, more than eight Titans—these are the real bad mofos of the EVE fleet, capable of equipping a superlaser—have already been destroyed in the Battle of System B-R5RB. The belligerents are, once again, the N3 Coalition and the Clusterfuck Coalition (CFC), with other alliances assisting both sides.

What touched off this battle? A missed bill payment, basically.

"Earlier today an alliance in the N3 coalition missed a bill payment for the system where Pandemic Legion is staging and storing their fleets," writes EVE. "This missed bill caused sovereignty to drop across the system leaving the station vulnerable to capture. Seizing the opportunity, the CFC (Goonswarm Federation, Razor Alliance, Black Legion and the Initiative) and Russian Coalition (Solar Fleet, Darkness of Despair and Against ALL Authorities) captured the station."

Notes

-Started from a missed bill payment from the N3 Coalitiom, which "caused sovereignty to drop across the system leaving the station vulnerable to capture."

-N3 Coalition vs Clusterfuck Coalition (CFC)

-CFC (Goonswarm Federation, Razor Alliance, Black Legion and the Initiative) and the Russian Coalition (Solar Fleet, Darkness of Despair and Against ALL Authorities) captured the station.

UPDATE:

The battle has concluded with $284,000 worth of damage. Ok, so my math was wrong when the battle was still going on, oh well. I'm not sure what the final Titan kill count was, but the last time I checked, it was at 57, at that was long before the battle ended. There MAY have been ~70 Titans or so destroyed, I dunno, I'm just guesstimating here. Either way, the battle was crazy, so crazy in fact, that the server crashed.

The battle also made headlines on CBS, FOX News, and other publications. Here's the FOX News article about it:

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2014/01/28/unpaid-bill-costs-gamer-200000-in-eve-online/

Oh, and EVE is having a PLEX sale. I don't think they can help but tease the battle with this picture found on their Facebook page:

This is an epic Fuckup.

I remember back when I played eve and big battle broke out... (I made sure I was systems away since I made all my money from cutting profits out of trades between people.) Still these recent huge ones are really impressive, and I never really saw anything of this scale myself. A couple really big battles, but not any titan destruction.

this is amazingly crazy for someone not paying rent.....squatters lol

With today's technology I often wonder why we don't have colonies on the moon or Mars. Then I go to Wal Mart for 5 minutes and realize the vast majority of the human populace isn't ready for such things.

I'm not sure, but I know it's a lot. @Vitalius probably has the right idea.

I really don't know what to say about this.

On one side:

WHAT KIND OF MENTALLY INSANE MORON WOULD SPEND THIS MUCH MONEY ON A GOD DAMN VIDEO GAME?!

On the other side:

Well it is their money and their life. And whether it's a video game or not, I guess this is the main (probably the only) hobby for these people, and many people before them have had spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on their hobbies.

So while I do ask the question, post-31230-Ryan-Reynolds-BUT-WHY-gif-Har and say MFW+I+thought+the+dots+implied+that+the+, I guess in the end

Correction: Over $4,000.

27 * 4 = 108. So over $108,000 worth of ships have been destroyed so far, just in Titans.

Diagram for people curious on ship costs:

scale-title.jpg

The numbers are ISK, USD, and Hours.

Where ISK is EVE online money they cost, USD is real money they cost, and hours is manufacturing time. 3400 hours = 145 days roughly.

FYI, this diagram is old and Titans now sell for around 160 B ISK. Or roughly $11,000.

So 27 Titans is over $300,000.

I HOPE that large space battles in Star Citizen are on the same scale as EVE Online. They would be even more epic because we can actually control our ships in Star Citizen, whereas in EVE you just click around. So the dog fighting would be much more intense. God I really hope that Star Citizen can live up to this.

Yes and No, respectively.

It's real money, and they lose the ships forever.

This is why I, and everyone else should, play eve. Haven't been in something so big, but it's fun to fly out and watch.
