hdmi 1.4 can do 120hz at 1080p and hdmi 2.0 can do 144hz 1080p

 

depends on the display port cable I think but 1080p most of them (if not all) can do 144hz

Depends on the version. 

HDMI and Display port have a bunch of different versions from HDMI 1.2 all the way to 2.0a (I think that's newest.) 

 

If you scroll down on these two webpages, you can see charts that have version numbers along the top and supported resolution and framerate along the left side.

You can use this to see what HDMI versions you will need for 144Hz, because it depends on the resolution. 

HDMI 2.0 supports 144Hz at 1440p and lower, HDMI 1.4 only at 1080p. Keep in mind both your GPU and monitor will need that particular HDMI version to support.

In theory, all Displayport cables can do the same: https://www.displayport.org/cables/how-to-choose-a-displayport-cable-and-not-get-a-bad-one/

In practice, I have often found those thin cheap Displayport cables can't support what the full Displayport 1.4 spec supports.

How can i know if my hdmi is 1.4 or 2.0

I dunno, it's probably labeled on the cable or around the port. Usually 2.0 cables cost more than any of the other ones besides the versions above it.

 

It's probably just a safe bet to get a display port cable that supports it or an hdmi cable that supports.

what video card do you have....it all depends on that, all newer cards have 2.0 its older cards you have to worry about
i believe amd card 400 series and newer and nvidea 900 series and newer (i thing a couple high end 700s also) all have hdmi 2.0
