How about this CPU

Ok so right off the bat I’m gonna say this- I’m looking at this cpu because it’s cheap. I don’t have the money (the $30 more even) for a ryzen chip. So what do you guys think of this 

AMD A8-9600 (Bristol Ridge) 

 

I know most people think “oh A-series was so bad” and all that but compared to what I have (AMD Athlon II X4 650) this is a pretty decent jump up. Thoughts? Opinions?

I'd suggest getting a used 8350, or a used phenom x6.

That's a very slow CPU, according to Userbenchmark it gets beaten by an Athlon 200GE.

It has 4 cores but same performance as an Athlon 200ge (2core, 4 threads, better graphics, zen cores)

 

You have to be careful and determine in advance if the motherboard supports it or now, in the latest bioses.

 

Some motherboards were equipped with small bios chips, so there was no enough room in the bios to support pre-Zen chips, and Zen 1xxx series, and Zen 2xxx series, and Zen based chips like Athlon 200ge ... so something had to give, and support for those Bristol Ridge cpus was removed from SOME motherboards.

I suggest saving up, working overtime, etc to afford decent stuff.  You're trying to force something and it isn't worth it.

I have a 4590S and a 4460S, both a step up from the 4440S and for HTPC or office use they're fantastic, for older games they'd also be a solid choice, but for more modern stuff...ehhhhh 4 cores, 4 threads, and a lower clock speed is going to hamper them a bit. They would not be my first choice but wouldn't be terrible, if you have baseclock overclocking available on a Z87 or Z97 board then you can run them a little faster but I don't know how much further you will get with them.

 

I did run into a problem with them however, an Asus H87 board I have that claims compatibility with both CPU's would not POST or boot with them at all, worked with an i3 4130 just fine however.

You know, used Ryzen prices on eBay are actually phenomenal, you can occasionally find a Ryzen 5 1400 under $100. Otherwise, grab a 1600 and the cheapest B350 board with VRMs. Local PC shops and sales are ideal for this.

$20-30 more but massively more versatile imo. Sacrifice somewhere else, like a cheaper case.

Value wise it's nearly impossible to argue with the Ryzen 5 1600 but that doesn't change how the 2200G also is a better pick than hunting second hand i5's from several generation ago hehehe

I’ve got no need for an igpu, I’ve already got an R9 380 (not great- I know.) that works pretty good. I have not seen any ryzen prices like that mentioned by @fasauceome but I’ll keep looking.

I'm confused. You're listing AM4 and LGA1150 socketed chips but saying you have very limited money for a CPU.  If you are getting a whole new motherboard why can't you get a decent processor? Do you have DDR3 or 4 RAM? Why not save up longer for better parts?

Yeah I’ve got ddr3 at the moment. My motherboard only has pcie 2.0 x16 and usb 2.0 so that’s why I want a new one. Plus my cpu sucks so if I’m upgrading my motherboard why not upgrade my cpu too?

If it's a board that has some VRM cooling and lets you adjust voltage then start by OC'ing the CPU a bit, you might get a little more life out of it. You can push that CPU to at least 3ghz base clock which also bumps the turbo clocks up too, should be able to see X3480 speeds out of it with a little more voltage, assuming you have the cooling for it.
