Turning my laptop into a desktop

jsm777

Hello,

I want in the near future to mod my laptop into a desktop, these are my current laptop specs:

This is what the laptop looks like:

The other 2 DDR4 slots are under the keyboard. This is what the "cooling" looks like for the CPU and GPU:

Dimensions WxDxH: 386x262x38mm; 15.44x10.48x1.52-inch
Thickness:

1.52in / 38mm

If you wonder why I want to do this, to put it simply my new job doesn't require me to travel anymore.

They have provided me with a surface, which is what I will use on my daily at work.

I feel the components are getting too hot. My goal is also to make all of this way cooler.

Does anyone have any kind of experience on this type of project?

I don't have a set budget for this, so anything goes, my problem is I don't really know where to start.

If anyone could help with some direction or something, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

sell the laptop and buy desktop components

the desktop will be shipped and built before you even begin designing a cooler that will transform the laptop into a slower version of the desktop you could have had.

I don't think I could sell the laptop and make enough money to get the same equivalent components in a desktop PC.

Plus at that price, I don't think many people would buy the laptop either.

Also, I am looking to do this as a fun project more than anything. Sure the easy route is to buy a desktop, but I don't see the fun in that.

Thanks.

So I am new to this forum as you can see by my post count, maybe I misunderstood what the discussion in this sub forum is supposed to be about?

I thought that this was a place for modding enthusiasts? Like a place for people that like to tinker, modify PC hardware and other projects...

Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum, would anyone be so kind to show me were I should be posting if there is such a place here?

Thank you very much and sorry about that.

it sure is, but you will be turning a multi thousand dollar laptop into something no one else would buy. you would be able to sell it and buy a same specced desktop

I hate to say it but this will be a major waste of time to carry out, there is a difference to case modding and making something different, this just simply will not be practical or easy enough to complete. The motherboard, GPU, Cooler, SSD/HDD's as well as power supply are not going to fit anything other than the laptop shell. If you do this, you will potentially waste money and time trying to get something to work in a standard PC case, just as well as if it was still in the laptop shell. Either keep the laptop as is or sell it and buy a proper form factor desktop with non-propriety components.

If you want to upgrade the cooling, put a few holes in appropriate places for breathing of the components, or raise it with a laptop cooler etc.

My Rig:

Xeon E5 1680 V2 @ 4.5GHz - Asus Rampage IV Extreme X79 Mobo - 64GB DDR3 1600MHz - 8 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile - CAS 10-10-10-27 - AMD Radeon RX 6700XT Sapphire Pulse 12GB - DeepCool E-Shield E-ATX Tempered Glass Case - 1 x 1TB Crucial P1 NVMe SSD - BeQuiet Straight Power 11 850W Gold+ Quad rail - Fractal Design Celsius S36 & 6 x 120mm silent fans - Lenovo KBBH21 - Corsair Glaive RGB Pro - Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit

Monitors - 3 x Acer Nitro 23.8" 1080p 75Hz IPS 1ms Freesync Panels = AMD Eyefinity @ 75Hz

Waterproof everything, put it in the water as Linus did with a MacBook

Thoughts become things. What you hold in your mind, you will hold in your hand.

Be happy for yourself.
