Inexpensive brand new GPUs being sold online

oresti

Good day everyone,

I am new here so please excuse me if I posted this topic in the wrong place.

Today I just searched for 4GB GTX 1050 TI's on ebay and I came accross some really cheap cards (considering their actual value), and the sellers were claiming that their product is brand new. Here is a link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GTX-1050TI-4G-128BIT-DDR5-Geforce-GTX-1050-Ti-Video-Game-Graphics-Card-Blue-IB/163387049808?hash=item260aa08750:g:0T8AAOSw8L5b9RBf

So my question is, how is it possible that a brand new 4GB GTX 1050 TI can cost 62$? Are they scammers or what is the matter? Has any of you tried buying one of these before?

Thanks in advance.

It's usually a card with 1 GB or 2 GB of memory with a modified BIOS and maybe shroud with fancy fans added to it to make it look more high end.

As it has only a pci-e 6 pin connector,  you're looking at one of these: GTX960 , GTX950, GTX 750Ti ,   GT 740 ,  GT 730, GTX 660 , GTX 650Ti , GTX 650 Ti , GTX 650, GTX 550 Ti  and out of those, pick whatever had a 128 bit bus option... if they're even not lying about it.

In the pictures there's also a number on the back of the circuit board.. 0617... that  typically means week 6, year 2017, so the circuit board was probably manufactured in February 2017

GT 740 is a good candidate, as it still has VGA out... newer cards like GTX 950 tend to not have VGA.

This model seems to use a circuit board that's quite similar layout wise: https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/N740-2GD5/Gallery#lg=1&slide=0

well, no , not quite the same (looking at fan connector), but it's close enough to think it's a "reference design" for GT 740, or a  slightly modified one.

Not to mention GTX 1050Ti cards get all of their power from the motherboard and do not require any additional power cable from the PSU.

Well, officially a GTX 1050ti uses up to 75w but on average less - in theory, from the pci-e slot it's allowed to take up to 10w from 3.3v and 65w from 12v.

So depending on ram used, amount, and gpu/memory frequencies configured you could get the card to use less than 75w.

But some manufacturers may add a 6 pin pci-e connector to get a cheaper design (use only 12v instead of both 3.3v and 12v) and to have some room for overclocking, without "stressing"  the slot power delivery.

So having a 6pin pci-e connector is not really a reliable indicator.

I stand corrected.  I personally have never seen a 1050Ti with a 6pin or 8 pin connector on it at all.  But to be fair I am far from an expert.  Thanks for the info

Yeah, there's 35+ models that have no extra connectors listed at the store i often check.

GTX 1050 / GTX 1050ti with 1 pci-e 6pin connector at my favorite local store:

it's not.

they will report in GPU-z and other such programs as a GTX1050 ti because of a fake bios, but they are absolutely 100% fake, put the idea out of your head.

I think Jayztwocents did a video on one of these fake GPUs from China that someone sent it. I believe it was actually a GTX660 or something... not anywhere near what they claimed it to be but the BIOS did lie effectively to GPUz
