Opinion on 14 Year Old With $3000 Setup?

The_Edster

When I got the PC the 3770k has just come out..

Oh, you already have it. I thought you were building it. My mistake.

I can be a cynical a**hole at times. I apologize if I cause any offence at those time. I also occasionally have issues communicating my point. Extreme introversion + Photographic memory + Some other things.

I've actually seen this a fair bit, lots of young teens who seem to have vast sums of income to build these type of machines. And its not just that they build the machines for crazy sums but also that they seem to do it every year..... I don't know about others here but when I grew up I was lucky to get £2 a week pocket money and if I ever wanted something I WORKED for it. Even my modest £1200 build has taken a year to save up for.

Its just seems like a lot of time these kids are just given the money and the parents allow it, its not a good message to give a child to let them think "mummy and daddy will pay for it".

Just wondering what your opinion would be on a 14 year old who has a setup costing over 3k? And they had earned all the money to pay for it themself?

My secondary rig in signature is my 5 yr old's PC. It was close to or a bit over $600. Add the display, desk, chair, KB and mouse, 360 pad, headset, and my anxiety it all adds up. I told him the PS3 was going to lose value soon, so it would be smart to sell it now and get a PS4 at release. He agreed but soon fell in love with my PC. I was short on cash at the time so I sold my Galaxy S4 to make up the difference. I promised him. So, I hustled and ordered the parts. For his 6th birthday in Feb, he's getting Kaveri. Hope he learns to program for HSA so we can get this ball rollin'. LOL

I agree with this but this is not the case for me, my parents didn't give me any money for what I have and I worked to earn it all. They made me make a resume and get a job at age 12 at my local Bistro (Yes you can get a job at 12), over the years I have worked up and have become quite respected in the restaurant and all my work has paid off with the pay checks! :)

I think parents who spoil kids should be taught a lesson in how to bring up a child without thinking they can get anything.

Not trying to be rude but if you came here expecting us to be impressed your a bit late.

And just a question but is 3k the amount you've invested in it (original build +upgrades) or just what you currently have

hey as long as mum and daddy didn't pay for the build, then idc the age. but if the parents are paying specs should be entry level. just my thoughts.
I've the same attitude towards performance cars, if your parents paid for it, it doesn't count.

The Build:

Intel Core i7-3770k

PNY GTX 780 3GB

Corsair 650D

ASRock Extreme 4 Motherboard

16GB Corsair XMS3 1600MHZ

256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD

2TB Seagate

if its earned by you, through working chores, a job or something like that, or even as simple as you helped your parents out doing more then just expected chores in exchange for a pc at the end then ok
My father owns a Landscaping business, and recently got done for DUI< has lost his license for 6 months, So i'm volunteering with him for the next 6 months after work (work 5 hours a day at a school and worknig with him from 1-7 as a driver) and i get the second work ute at the end, its $14,000 worth of work at the pay rate he gives for a car worth 9k.

How can a computer change the world? :P

well a 3000$ worth of money can make a missile.

also don't underestimate computers. even a cheap dell laptop can cause Genocide to the world.

When 2 things meet each other, Quantum stuff happens.

Well sure :P but I don't think my parents would let me spend 3k on a missile xD, sure a cheap laptop could but only in the hands of someone with the knowledge to..

I'm not much older than the described person and have a decent rig. It's a great thing we don't get hit with responsibility. But i do think that build is overkill.

I think it is overkill. He should have used at most $1500 for a decent PC and saved up the rest for future stuff. My first real build was when I was 13 and I had a $600. My parents combined my birthday and Christmas gifts to pay for it. I wanted to build my own PC but my parents dumped $1200 on TigerDirect. This is the build:

MOBO: MSI Z87-G41
Power: GS 800
GFX: Radeon HD 7950
CPU: Intel Core I7-4770k
Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-1(Power button LED didn't work :( )
CPU Coolin: Seidon 280XL
Storage: Some 2TB HDD

if he worked for it then he can do what he wants... personally i wouldn't but i don't know him, i don't know his needs, and i don't know how much money he had to begin... with that in mind I don't think i can judge him

Does everyone know that the 3k was spent on my ENTIRE setup and not just the pc, that would be overkill. My pc was 1700..

I find spending that much on a PC pretty wasteful and foolish at that age.

I find it wasteful at any age unless it's used to generate an income.

Is it a pre-built machine? If so, I would have a problem with it. if the guy built/configured it himself then thats great! If its like an alienware with top specs then it is a waste of money because the guy wouldn't be learning about the hardware nor be using it to its potential. oh yea and it would probably cost his/her parents more than it should.

$3000 is a lot of money. The kid should learn the value of money and that blowing $3000 on a PC is a rare luxury.

It's you vs a lot of other kids who didn't have cash for that at 14, I think a few posts here are bit defensive about their lack of similar as a kid.

I think that if you earned money and want to spend it on an decent rig, then in my honest opinion that's great use of funds as computers are very useful, increasingly so every day and having a powerful one that could help you with any production work/experimentation you want to do and also double as a kick ass way to game is winning.

All these people saying its crazy to spend that much on a computer at that age are daft, He's 14 he has no other expences, why shouldn't he spend his money on computer parts, it's what I did...mind you I also didn't have friends :-(

Why do you always die right after I fix you?

I first bought it 2 years ago and have been upgrading it since, there is hardly any hardware left that is the original build. My 1 monitor eventually progressed to 3.. Haha

I have a job and earned all the money myself over 2 years of work at my local restaurant.

wait you are 14 and you have worked for at least 2 years. So if my maths are up to scratch you started working at around 12 years old?!?!
