The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is tracking a series of incidents involving Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure tampering. CISA is aware of multiple executive branch agency domains that were impacted by the tampering campaign and has notified the agencies that maintain them. Using the following techniques, attackers have redirected and intercepted web and mail traffic, and could do so for other networked services. The attacker begins by compromising user credentials, or obtaining them through alternate means. The attacker alters DNS records, like Address (A), Mail Exchanger (MX), or Name Server (NS) records, replacing the legitimate address of a service with an address the attacker controls.They can also obtain valid encryption certificates for an organization’s domain names. This allows the redirected traffic to be decrypted, exposing any user-submitted data. Since the certificate is valid for the domain, end users receive no error warnings. This Emergency Directive remains in effect until replaced by a subsequent Binding Operational Directive or terminated through other appropriate action.

 

My Thoughts:
We truly are in the modern age with warfare occurring within our infrastructure and digital world compared to ground battles of last century. Data, credentials, and other information is being stolen and manipulated with no obvious signs, error messages, or warnings to the end user. I've been watching this since early January and will continue to keep an eye on it as events progress.

I remember going to a hacker/programming speaking event out in Boston (I forget the name of it...It was hosted by some ezine if anyone knows which I am speaking of?) and one of the speakers was mudge from l0pht about this 16 years ago and DNSSEC was his topic... He said one day unless they implemented some form of encryption based DNS verification (makes me think DNS on the blockchain but the word blockchain didn't exist back then (Thankfully.?) that the whole internet could be subverted and nobody would know any different.

It’s funny because it’s almost like people already did that and blocked Amazon from the entire internet for a day. Oh wait. Lol no really DNS has some big holes in it. It needs more authentication factors in iTunes swapped over to DNSSEC a couple months ago

This is what seems to be the most concerning part, once your credentials are no longer secure then that's what you have to worry about. The rest of this stuff is all just par for the course for when someone manages to steal your info.

This is why I use encrypted DNS through cloudflare along with setting my pfSense system to route any changes to the DNS servers back to my pfSense system and get changed back to the correct ones. This means even if somehow I had malware on my system that changes my DNS servers it will route that ip address I'm trying to get to into my pfSense box and then run that ip address through the DNS server on my pfSense server allowing me to get where I wanted to without DNS hijacking.

Is this a vulnerability report or are there someone doing major phishing activities right now?

Always enjoy the informative posts @rcmaehl , DNS tampering seems to be a very common method of attackers stealing information. It seems like such a simple tactic with huge rewards for the attackers. Essentially replace your 'digital phone-book' with a misleading one and then I guess make a similar looking yet fake website, the users thinks it's genuine and you recieve whatever data they enter. I really need to read more into the Domain Name System and why this type of attack is so prevalent and what cyber-security professionals can do to stop this.

The worst part of this is they don't even need to make a similar website or a website at all. They're in network and can redirect whatever data how they please, encrypted or otherwise. They can redirect data A but not data B. They can display the actual sign in page but redirect the credentials the user enters.
