sdasdasdasd

heres my review on windows 10 1809 in this discussion i will describe bad and good thing  about windows 10 1809 but first of all here are my specs:

CPU: intel celeron N3350 2 cores at 1.10 Ghz

GPU:intel hd graphics

HDD:1TB western digital HDD

good things:

1.ethernet networking

1809 fixed my ethernet networking it didnt work before on 1703,1709,1803

2.a bit faster boot speeds

my boot speeds went from 56 seconds to 50 seconds

bad things:

1.gaming performance

my fps went down to 34 from 43

but it boosted it on some other games

2.a bit slower laptop

my laptop got a bit slower but its ok

1. Probably your ethernet working now because update installs new drivers, what you could do yourself before.

2. In my case boot speeds decreases by 3 seconds, but really - who cares. Responsiveness is more important than boot speed.

3. Games performance - similar to ethernet - probably Windows installs new drivers which makes some problems.

This is not really a review, because it's just few less important things.

If you want to write real review, focus on what is new in Windows 10 1809 and how it works.

I can add than some popular ramdisk applications can't allocate more than 3 GB in this build (good that there are others), one of remote control utilities stops reporting pointer shape change proper etc. But good things - I noticed that I have a little more control over updates and Windows keeps my settings.

In which game did your FPS drop from 43 to 34?

It's slower because you probably have like 10 different updates layered on top of each other because you haven't clean installed in years.

That's the main reason why people's computers get slower with windows.

So most of people here are already using the 1809?

My system downloaded it already but I paused until the next 35 days, because I'm still worried with its problems.

"We don't know how upgrade works, but clean install resolves all problems". It can be magic I guess. And windows.old gives no clue, right? Updates layered on top of each others... Too many guessing guys here, not enough knowledge.

To me, it sounds like drivers issues before and after.

Gaming performance is also driver related. And game optimization can change between versions of GPU drivers. Sometimes by optimizing the drivers for new set of games, breaks the performance of older games, and at they may or may not care about it based on popularity or see if people complain or not.

What you can do, is make sure  the version of your Intel graphics drivers is the latest, and if not, see if performance improved. If not, install older driver versions, and see if that helps.

If anything performance should increase, due to optimization work done by Microsoft on 1809 to reduce the impact of Specter patch work done before.

I found I generally need to re-install video drivers after major Windows Updates otherwise things don't always work properly. Having said that, 1809 seems to least change existing settings and features compared to previous major updates.

Hmm no.

Slowness is usually related to fragmentation from using HDDs.

Remember that you have fragmentation, open space fragmentation and data scattering (files to load something is all scattered from the begging middle and/or end of disks, making the heads spend more time moving all over the place, than to just have all the data files next to each other so it doesn't need to move). Most defragmentation utilities including the one built-in into Windows, only deals with fragmentation of files. It doesn't deal with open space fragmentation and data scattering

Damn, I like to know at least ONE defrag tool that keeps all files in folder together. Basically all defrag tools I saw and try was very similar without any major differences.

O&O Defrag, not free, but not particularly expensive either. Solid software, nice documentation explaining each mode and provides recommendations for the typical target systems. Has a 0-day trial.

From experience, doing a complete defrag, proper, with data sorting with it takes 5 to 8h. (depending on how data you have and extent of fragmentation), so disable sleep, and let run all night as you sleep.

You clearly haven't seen all the people with SSDs that haven't clean installed in years getting performance issues and failed updates and other problems.

I also do a clean install on my laptop at least once or twice a year, and it gives a nice performance boost to have a fresh installed OS instead of one with a dozen updates on it.

Yes it only has an SSD, and there's only 5 programs on it to keep everything as lightweight as possible.

Some people knows how system works and why it slows down, some people made clean install system every 6 months.

I recommend listen to people who have knowledge and not recommend making system install every problem. It's professional forum after all where people search for solutions, not for "made clean install" advice in every post.
