Aren't AMD cards generally better for mining than Nvidia cards? (coming from a person who heard it from another somewhat-more-techy person and never actually researched it. correct me if I'm wrong)

Depends on the specific currency you want to mine. For example, my 1070 mines ETH (ether) quite well and I'm able to reduce the power limit to 60% while increasing the hash rate by OCing just the memory. So yeah, it all depends. ;)

This, ETH loves overclocked memory.

Depending on crypto, Nvidia cards do fairly well when tuned correctly.  There a reason 1060s and 1070s got bought up so quick several months back.
