the CPU will do fine even up to 100C, its that for any processor, keeping a lower temperature helps it use less power, which helps it overclock better. So if you can keep it below 60C that would be much much better. The bigger the chip, the more temperature effects stability due to power draw.

Hehe, I picked up an X5650 (6c/12t, 2.66GHz base 3.06Ghz boost or something like that) for $17 on eBay. IDK how it overclocks though. Nice board too, I have the Rampage III Formula.

Ah.... and as far as the voltage goes, is the one to keep at or below 1.35 the CPU or QPI voltage?

i've had my 2 xeon x5650 for a few years already but i bought them new from an unused tray for £80 a piece at that time as it costed more at that time.

i also bought 2 xeon L5520 at the same time for £40 a piece. But i only have 1 out of 3 x58 boards working  . I do have a hp proprietary board that accepts 2 CPUs but cant overclock so i was going to put the L5520s in for a low power 8 core machine that would have 12 ram slots and can handle ECC registered. That hp board costed me £60.

 

I believe 1.35V is at the CPU not QPI. You might want to double check the intel voltage range for your particular CPU.

 

With the L3 cache speeds, make sure to keep it below your L2 cache otherwise you will get an instant reboot (CPU error).

My x5650 at 4.66 hit 103c in aida 64, and 76c in cinebench, was 100% stable, using a noctua nhd14, got 1104 in cinebench multi, now i had to go down to 4.35 as the cpu is dying. 945 cinebench, 71c in cine, and 97c in aida.

I have an HP proliant dl380 g6 with dual E5520 and 24gb of ram (is suppose to become my NAS). the thing sounds like a jet engine most of the time and really doesn't like getting an OS installed. I have tried at least 6 times now.

Yeah, to overclock to 5ghz one time, it was needed, 1.425, and at 4.66 stable it was 1.375, 4.35 its 1.35

As for the other voltages its safe to put them higher. Theres a voltage you have to set somewhere i cant remember but it helps the BLCK to clock higher and CPU too much easier.

 

For any CPU it will disintegrate at a certain voltage (like 1.8V for pentium 4s), so just stick to the safe voltage said by intel and you should be fine.

 

Make sure your temps stay below 80C.

Well, with the prices they cheap xeons are going for 1.4V should be safe as long as the temps are alright. One guy on a German Forum is still using an e5620 that was at 5.2 with 1.8Vs

That's already pretty hot for stock, mine stays at around low 60s at 4.2 oO

Really, just get whatever you feel like. If you just want to overclock, getting a Quad core might also be worth considering - the x5667 (4x3.06 Base) goes for about 20$. The e5620 for about 5 (mine did only 4.25, though there are reports of these going beyond 5 GHz)

I'll ask again - anyone interested in trying if your boards manage similar overclocks on the e-Series Xeons at similar temps? The e5620 is only 5 bucks, and it handles 1.5V like a champ

The 45nm lga 1366 will take more volts but you could be limited by your L3 cache speeds as apparently the frequency for it has to be at least double that of your ram.

Link me to that Xeon! And I think the highish temps are because I have an Enthoo Evolv with the stock fans. Mebbe get 3x120mm for the front to get better airflow?

The max VCore intel deems safe is about 1.35V. But as long as it stays reasonably cool 1.4V should remain safe, and maybe more with increased degradation. I would limit it to 1.4V max for a chip you use in your main system, but for benching I would go as far as temps allow

I wouldn't buy 45nm chips at all, the e56** chips are all sub 30 (starting with the e5620 at 5) and especially the quads can live on higher VCores

What OS? Mine made me wait for 5 minutes with the blinking cursor before it finally booted very slowly into the Windows 10 installer on my bootable USB.

I have tried windows 10, freeNAS, Debian (it doesn't like the default boot loader). i got Debian to install but wouldn't boot.

its the CPU degradation thats the issue, doesnt matter if its quad or 6 core. The larger the manufacturing process the more volts it'd take.

 

You already see the effect with GPUs, voltages no longer help and temps can significantly alter power use. This is not something i've only experienced with GPUs. CPUs like the 36 core Tilera tile use 10W more at idle at 60C vs 50C. My HD 7970 would overclock really well as long as i kept the temps around 60 at max (required max fan speeds as its a blower fan) but that 1.3Ghz overclock on the HD 7970 back than running crysis 3 maxed out at 1080p 50 fps was an awesome sight.

Huh... what mobo do you have? Have you checked through the BIOS for any funky settings?

Well, with those Quads it doesn't really matter as they basically don't get hot. I'm using a mid-tier air cooler (30€) and it kept my e5620 at about 60°C at 1.5V under load. And if its just for benching, the lifetime of the CPU doesn't really matter...

I haven't killed one yet, I'm just saying if you really want a CPU not to care about that is the one (it isn't likely, it is just possible:P)
