I was surprised too. But it stayed even cooler at stock speeds.

Don't get a 5690 for overclocking! If you want a CPU to overclock and don't care about budget as much get a W3680/W3690, those are unlocked like the i7 980X/990X. Oddly enough they are cheaper than the x5680 and x5690.

@Lord Nicoll Well, you aren't using Air cooling for that, are you? :D

The x5690 is significantly more expensive than other xeons of its generation but I already have two and I thought it would be cool to keep a theme :)

Using a fan should be good, I know my Rampage III Formula (I got it used, so no accessories) came with a fan to cool the northbridge and such when water-cooling. So it's designed to be actively cooled.

I've seen those too. On my MSI I sometimes feel like some fool decided they need a cool decorative plate above one of the heatsinks, making it almost useless if air is coming form ontop... I'll try to remove it over the next couple days.

Xeon e5649@4.4 GHz on Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte x58a-OC (whatever I feel like to set up at a time) , 6x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Gainward GTX 670 Phantom, Samsung 840 Evo 240 GB, BeQuiet L8 530W

Still wouldn't spend as much on a used Xeon, just get the unlocked (!) W3680. Only single socket support, but who cares if you are planning to overclock anyways? SR-2s are a bit too uncommon anyways...

That looks small enough that it should be okay, if you want to take it off though I imagine it is glued?

I am not using air, that was on a 240mm custom loop with the window up (ambient air of like 14°C) on a CPU that is entirely using liquid metal. Needless to say it can handle it.

Well, it kinda blocks the middle of the heatsink. It should be alright, but it could be much better.

Yeah, I've seen that. Over 5 times as much as I spent on my system this year, including spare CPUs lol

That is really cold haha. This winter when it snows I want to take my computer into the garage where it is very cold and try overclocking in there

It also came with 2 E5606's, but I've given away better LGA 1366 Xeons than those. (pair of L5620's)

Naw, I don't use it much, liquid metal can't take the low low temps so I'd need to remove it, put Kryonaut on it, do it, remove the Kyronaut and put Conductonaut back on, and that's all really expensive.

Well, they aren't the 1000$s your guys are claiming now :P On ebay there are currently a couple starting with an auction thats currently sitting at 350, and the last couple boards that sold sold between 400 and 600$.

yeah, I think it's like 8°C it freezes. Now if you keep it under a load and above that, that's fine, but it's still a little sketch. On DICE or LN2 liquid metal is a complete no go, and even indium solder can give you some trouble if there was any imperfections in it.

I'll try to remember to post some screenshots when I get home. The computer looks like a computer, but the bench performance is pretty good. Comparable to housemate's i7-6700k/Fury Nano system except slightly behind in graphics scores.

I have no idea how or why Linus needed phase change for the i7 4790K on 1.4v for 5GHz, he didn't even delid it, complete waste of time. I could have probably gotten 5.2GHz on almost 10°C full load temps with a cooler like that with a delid and Kyronaut.
