Oh trust me, he went pretty far. Just no delid, extreme overclcoking doesn't belong in the same system as stock TIM.

In that case that is really disappointing. In your opinion as far as air cooling goes is it ever worth it to delid? I haven't built it yet but I am planning on overclocking a x5690 and I would like to be able to do it on air if I can. Eventually I would like to do hard line water cooling but I don't have the budget for that right now

Now I have delidded loads of indium soldered CPUs, no reason to do it really, you'd be more likely to break the chip. I use a blow torch to do it, and then some ferric chloride to remove the remains of the indium and other metals off the die, I get my desoldered delids to be shiny like a fresh die, but there is no need for air or liquid cooling, and not always a reason even on LN2.

Well, if you want to go as far as possible the recommendation for an unlocked CPU of any variant is probably still quite valid, given that most chips start getting more difficult at ~210-220 BCLK...

Okay cool thanks, that is good to know. I had considered it but it doesn't sound like it will be necessary which is kind of nice because that is extra work that I no longer have to do

Alrighty, gonna type out my Xeon rig story. @WhisperingKnickers is the one who got me into this. 

 

CPU: Xeon X5675, came with the;

Mobo: Rampge III Formula, got it from a guy on eBay who @WhisperingKnickers pointed me to, who luckily for me lives in Nashville. So I drove through terrible traffic, ran a red light, drove around the mall for 30 minutes looking for a parking spot (only to find there were two massive parking garages behind it...), walked past all the lingerie shops (ew), got the the shop where he was meeting his GF, and exchanged $150 for the mobo and CPU. Also got to go to my first Microsoft Store (and the Apple store for like 5 minutes), so it made the drive worthwhile. Oh, and ate at Panera bread and grabbed a Starbucks coffee for the drive home. 

 

Cooler: Gammax 400 From Newegg

 

GPU: MSI Gaming 980 Ti 6G. Was gonna buy it from a guy on Craigslist, he got another buyer, but that buyer dumped him. Though by that time, I was buying an EVGA 1070 SC, but that guy pulled a no show and left me at Starbucks where we were supposed to meet. So quickly texted 980 Ti Dude, he was about 30 minutes away, so I went over and picked up this beauty, not even dusty, looked like it’d never been used (had tho, he just takes good care of his cards). 

 

RAM: 8GB of Crucial Ballistix RAM my dad had left over from an uncompleted computer revamp project, 8GB of ADATA XPG V1.0 (from @Vernw3 here on the forums), and 16GB of Kinston HyperX Savage (from @clementk)

 

SSD And HDDs: SSD is a Kingston HyperX I got off Newegg, WD Blue is for the same project the Crucial RAM came from, and the other two drives were ones I had lying around. 

 

PSU: M12II Evo 620W off Newegg. May RMA it though, gets super loud under load. 

 

Also, some USB 3.0 card off of Newegg.

 

Case: Enthoo Evolv ATX Tempered Glass. Got it as a last birthday present from my Aunt for my 18th, since I wnt3d something I could use a lot, but not need to replace in a couple years.

My X58 experience started when a friend gifted me an Asus X58 Sabertooth after giving him a mountain bike. I hemmed and hawed about "upgrading" from my Lenovo i7 2600 K330A Ideacentre. I finally took the plunge and slowly built him up piece by piece, swapping some parts out as the time went by. I had to remove the HDD chassis to make room or the 280mm radiator, as the case was only made to fit a 240.

I have a game server running off a 6 core xeon LGA 1366 overclocked to 4.3Ghz stable with ram around 1600Mhz and L3 cache running almost as fast as L2 cache giving a huge performance boost. I also use ECC ram as they are much better when doing bus overclocking but you cant get them cheap anymore :(. It is aircooled using a low profile cooler sitting in a 2U case.

 

I guess i'll post pics when my server arrives back.

 

If anyone has a working evga motherboard thats dual socket, i'd like to have it. 2 6 core xeons can be overclocked on that to give you 4+Ghz of 12 core goodness for cheap and fit 12 DIMMs for all the ram you need with support for ECC registered for massive ram amounts.

Wow. I do always tell people a Xeon is really just an i7 extreme edition (at least on LGA1366, IDK about the new ones), just higher binned so they run smoother and better. They’re made for 24/7 use after all.

i heard if you pass 200 BLCK you get huge performance increase. Anyone tested this yet?

Sadly my gigabyte board which had a massive chipset cooler had a broken CPU socket. Such as waste as i was planning to make it a file server with its 10 sata slots and 4 PCie x16 slots.

its really simple, there are old guides still out there and i once made a twitch video that expired on OCing that platform.

I think you have 3 speeds to worry about. The first is your ram, to OC high i set my ram speeds to minimum frequency. You should also lock all other speeds too.

You then have to overclock the BLCK which increases the bus and ram frequency, but you also have to balance that overclock with your cache speeds (its called a couple of things among different boards but has to be 2x the speed of ram for 45nm iseries, 1.5x speed of ram for 32nm, but the higher you get this the faster your CPU as this is the L3 cache that you're overclocking).

You can also overclock QPI too, but when you overclock BLCK this will overclock too so set this lower. Obviously a higher QPI speed is beneficial especially if you have the evga dual lga 1366 board.

I might have missed another frequency.

As for voltages there are 3 voltages you have to worry about.

Vcore

VTT (ram controller i think)

chipset voltage.

 

I recommend asus for lga 1366 overclocking.

Well, if you pass 200 MHz BCLK your Clockspeed will go up (if you keep the multiplier up), same for RAM QPI and everything. I'm running at 221 BCLK, but it should be linear if I were to guess.

Clockspeeds here are a bit all over the place with turbo, but if all cores are used it runs at 4.2 GHz. 

 

The highest report for BCLK speed on my board I've heard so far is 273, the highest I've managed is 240, though I want to try to beat that once my L5640 arrives. Pretty good for one of the cheapest x58 boards (btw, has anyone else here tried the e Xeons? Maybe they generally overclock better? Might be worth a try ;)

It was pitiful. He used a brand new, top of the line SS but in his mind he was using an air cooler so he got air cooler results.

@System Error Message 1.4v, 150BLCK, everything else as low as it goes (the BLCK OC bumped it up automatically), and it's running at 3.46GHz. Only had 5-10 minutes, so I'll have to try pushing it harder after work. What's a safe voltage for my CPU (It says the max is 2.3v in the BIOS, but that may damage the CPU, and I believe it :o)?

@System Error Message 1.4v, 150BLCK, everything else as low as it goes (the BLCK OC bumped it up automatically), and it's running at 3.46GHz. Only had 5-10 minutes, so I'll have to try pushing it harder after work. What's a safe voltage for my CPU (It says the max is 2.3v in the BIOS, but that may damage the CPU, and I believe it :o)?

CPU max save voltage is 1.35 i believe, or maybe 1.42V. I think it is mentioned on intel's own site as i checked there.

 

As for the other voltages its safe to put them higher. Theres a voltage you have to set somewhere i cant remember but it helps the BLCK to clock higher and CPU too much easier.

 

For any CPU it will disintegrate at a certain voltage (like 1.8V for pentium 4s), so just stick to the safe voltage said by intel and you should be fine.

 

Make sure your temps stay below 80C.

Ok, I'll google up that voltage. And staying below 80C shouldn't be too hard, it maxes at a little below 60 at stock.
