Warning: The UK PM calling for near total regulation of the internet

I'm trying so hard to find any meaning in that...

It doesn't matter because no one cares about effectiveness in any measurable way. It's like airport security and carry-on luggage restrictions: the key is to pass some measures that sound like we're doing something about it and move on.

There is no meaning in that. It is word salad, made by politicians who has no clue what they are putting into the salad

I agree, but travel restrictions aren't nearly as restrictive as restricting something like the internet, which effects practically everyone. Although I do see them getting some places with this. Unfortunately, it looks as if governments are just going to slowly strip away our freedoms until we're left with nothing at all.

Yes, I just meant that while is really hard to think of something that is simultaneously effective, worth it, and in the hands of the British government, what will probably happen is that they will pass some rules that are in their power, regardless of what it actually accomplishes, and how effective they are at it. Then label them "anti-terrorist internet rules" and have a concerned look when announce them.

No one actually owns the Internet, and no single person or organization controls the Internet in its entirety. The Internet is more of a concept than an actual tangible entity, and it relies on a physical infrastructure that connects networks to other networks. Jun 24, 2010 from Google. ICANN Doesn't run it, they can control it to some degree.

Yeah, but they can attempt to restrict access to certain sites within their countries. They can outlaw vpns and make certain content illegal to own. (this would also set a nasty precedent and ultimately restrict freedom of speech very harshly)

It's been done in other countries just fine. They won't get as far as they want to, but they'll definitely restrict some things. If not, just make it a pain in the ass to access.

She's doing what all politicians do, spouting out whatever makes her sound good when in reality she has no idea what she's talking about.

An industry expert has been on TV today telling her she's out of touch with reality and what she's proposing not only isn't possible outside of a China style firewall but even then it simply won't work. He made his point by outlining a case where UK intelligence had foiled a plot being planned by telegram and went on to say with VPNs being so easy to access (or even create) these days and the existence or onion interneting all she is going to do is push them into a place where the authorities can no longer monitor them effectively making them harder to track and catch.

Its all just pre election rhetoric to appeal to the masses, I'm sure she knows she could never do what she's proposing.

This is about Control. They're not concerned about the Muslims, for the most part. The Elites wall themselves off from the rest of their societies that has to pay for the policies they enact. Thus, they're not afraid of the actual terrorism.  What they're afraid of covers a lot of things, but the general points is always: 1) losing Control, since they don't truly have their own and 2) Preventing Reality from intruding upon their lives.

This is what the prelude to a civil war looks like. The acts are almost all by "known wolves", they have huge lists of them.  Kick them out of the country. It's fairly easy to do. Got a mosque that's a problem? Arrest the leadership for Sedition and boot them out.  It's actually not hard and it'll happen real, real fast if the Elites are ever actually under real threat.  It's really only a question of how bloody all of this is going to be, but the current set of Elites really is that foolish.  (They're not, generally, stupid, but not that smart either. They are, however, categorically foolish, since they lack the ability to understand actual Cause & Effect beyond what impacts their own bottom line.)

If you're historically literate, none of this stuff is new. It's pretty much a repeat of the end of the Roman period and multiple Chinese Dynasties. The leaders get fat, happy, spoiled and foolish, then convince themselves to take actions that'll clearly end in their own destruction.  I just wish it wasn't so predictable.

There's no way half this stuff is even possible without literally outlawing encryption, would be so unbelievably stupid that I can't even put it into words.

MI6 (known as SIS now) called for this to happen after the first attack in London this year.

If it was on a general news it won't be found unless it is still on or someone captured it.

But might be in here somewhere: http://www.bbc.co.uk/tv/bbcnews
