What do you think would be better, 4x 980Ti or 2x 1080Ti?

2x 1080 ti's.  As the 980 ti's go past 2 they have that massive degradation to the point where the 3rd and fourth have basically no returns.  2x 1080 ti's will have way less so they would perform way better :)

I disagree, SLI gets a bad rap when in reality there aren't really that many problems. Scaling isn't 1:1 by it has gotten better. Past 2 cards though is dumb now days unless you are doing something like octane.

Depends on the use case, if you are gaming, then the 1080tis but if using for rendering (parallel usage) the 980tis will have more CUDA enabled cores.

Every person I know including myself have NEVER had an issue. I had SLI 760s for years and never had an issue.

it's still hit and miss...even on older games...newer games...it's still the same it's always been...some games work well with SLI, many others don't...

I meant proper SLI configs. Fallout 4, Siege and Division barely touch the second card, DOOM doesn't use it at all and they patched in poor scaling, etc..

Well its to be expected when most people out there only runs 1080p 24inch monitors.

People use to SLI because they needed the extra horsepower, but now who does? a simple 1060 can handle what most people play or a 1070 to go over the top a bit. Then a 1080ti can handle 4k so SLI kinda become moot at this time.

 

Spending hundreds of thousands a year to employ programmers to support SLI just isn't worth while on the account sheet.

The division doesn't support sli in dx12 for starters so that pretty much nullifies both slides because they would even post the division one

Plus I cant even use Gsync right now... frame locks to 54fps constantly... excessive jitter and stutter when enabled in multiple games... ive just turned it off and hope the big fat 1080ti's can get me 60fps constantly.

3 way has issues 2 way is flawless for me especially with gsync

Look above for SLI numbers. FO4 uses it barely AT RELEASE. WD2/Wildlands uses whatever hardware you throw at it, decent engine.

But yeah. I might have dropped the money on SLI 1080ti (and watercooling) but im under no illusion that SLI is "good" it works about 50-70% of the time and even when it works its usually less than 50% extra FPS and can sometimes intorduce poor frame stutter and graphical artifacts.

SLI is what it is... its not a waste of time if you do it for the fun of doing it... if you do it seeking a huge imporvment to gaming perforamnce you will have a bad time...

 

Im playing Mass Effect Andromeda at the moment, I was getting around 40-60FPS on a single 1080ti, usually 60 but there were drops, with very rare drops to 35fps - now with SLI I am locked at 60fps. Is SLI WORTH going from 45-60fps or WORTH keeping all the ultra settings enabled? NO WAY! but to be fair you can have a great gaming experience on a single GTX1050 @ 1080p...
