Retina Macbook Pro Users Complaining About Anti-Reflective Coating Coming Off

Mew

Seems like the Anti-Reflective coating (not matte screen thing, just an additional coating that Apple applies that's also now used on the iPad Air 2) that Apple uses on their Macbooks can actually wear off. I wonder how quickly this will also affect iPad Air 2 users.

A growing number of users have turned to the Apple Support Communities, MacRumors discussion forums and Facebook in recent weeks to voice their complaints about the anti-reflective coating on Retina MacBook Pros becoming stained or wearing off. The long-standing display issue appears to affect several MacBook Pros, including mid-2012 to mid-2014 models sold between June 2012 and present.

The cause of the coating coming off appears to be the result of the keys and trackpad applying too much pressure on the screen when closed as well as the use of cleaning solutions.

Retina-MacBook-Pro-Coating-800x600.jpg

This is certainly very tragic as I have been very impressed with the not so reflectiveness of the glossy Macbook displays and iPhones compared to my super, super glossy Dell monitor. Apple also started using the same or similar coating on the iPad Air 2 to reduce the need for higher brightness levels in direct sunlight. It has yet to be seen if the iPad is or will be affected. Personally, I think iPads will be affected more likely due to the nature of their use case.

Holy shit, that's a pretty big issue. Apple might need to announce a free fix for this.

I doubt it. They'll just say it's an issue with the cleaning product and get away with it.

That actually might be likely since warranties don't usually cover wear and tear. But the other side of the argument is that it's a poorly designed gap when the laptop is closed. On the other hand, it could be because many Macbook users use those silicone keyboard covers that significantly add to the height of the keyboard which may cause this issue.

What I'm thinking they may do is shrug it off for a few months/year or so, then do a replacement program like the 2008 macbooks had.

This pisses me off. The anti-glare coating doesn't do shit in the first place.

Apple is forgetting their editing professionals when they make these machines.

I understand glass panels look pretty in the showroom, but AT LEAST have the option to order stuff with matte or not glass screens even if they have to be glossy, maybe not for laptops, but maybe the cinema screens and imacs? They are not near bright enough (a problem you've had since the matte screens in the days of old) and even in the dark you can see reflections  of your own face when editing stuff. People have been begging and begging for that option again for YEARS, and how do you attempt to please your professional editing audience you have for some reason? A trash can. A fucking nearly impossible to upgrade trash can. Sure the porice was alright, but they don't buy those kind of machines to save space you dumb asses, they throw a bunch of drives in to handle a bunch of raw video, and now we have to do all thunderbolt or USB drives.

God damn that pisses me off. And now the new macbook that's lighter than you air. Way to fuck up your product line. From a non-apple circlejerk hater like most PC users are, you guys have no fucking clue anymore.

Also please call it glare-gahzi instead of glare-gate. Getting tired of "gate", needs to be mixed up every now and then. I mean no one called the iphone thing bend-gazhi and that opportunity was perfect.

I can't imagine what "cleaning solutions" these people used. A lot laptops have pressure from the keys and trackpad  (we've all had to clean that annoying grid)

I mean it may very well not be apples fault this time. These people should know there's a proper way to clean glass panel screens with coating, and while that may not be it, I have my doubts about the average consumer's patience to research things properly.

You don't use windex, that's for sure, yet I see people using it all of the time. That will certainly destroy it Bam. Bet it's that.  Crisis averted.

Yep, windex is a very dangerous chemical to use sometimes. Everytime I look up how to clean the inside of windshields, people would be to point out that you should never use windex on tinted windows. I wonder how many people do that without doing any research......

It depends. If they have a glass panel, then they may (and most likely will) have an anti reflective coating. If not, it may just be a bare panel, or more of a matte plastic (which is typically even better for anti glare).

No but in all seriousness Apple products are only meant o be used for a year and then you buy another one. That premium you pay is for the privilege of having to get a new Apple product every year.

I've had AR coatings forever and I've opted for their matte finish ones where possible as well.

You know what this is above manufacturer defect? User stupidity.

Now, I'm fairly abusive with my retinabook but not in a million years will I clean the thing with anything other than water OR very solid, chemical lab grade solvents that evaporate instantly.

But even then, in not gonna try shit on the screen. They are expensive as is, what's the point?

I know the modus operandi is to assume that it's alays the company at fault, call me a cynic in saying that sometimes the users are just as much to blame.

They so clearly state how to clean the screen, even in the event of the keyboard leaving a imprint because it can make contact. We've all had that "grid" show up on our laptop screens at one point. Stop having greasy fingers and clean your damn shit.

This is beside the point, but the AR glass is nonsense. They should've offered a matte option. My matte 17" is great for colour work BUT I will say this, it is very colour accurate and at home where I'm not being abused by glare, it's far superior to my matte 17". Maybe it's just nostalgia. I liked the 17".

SNIP

Yeah I had to clean the rMBP screens roughly every hour when I was an apple specialist, never damaged a screen, i just used some generic screen cleaner liquid designed for TFT screens and a microfibre cloths

I like the AR screens, they are really good for colour work, and the really pop. the glare is mostly well controller compared to anything else with a glass screen

If my MBPR's anti-reflective coating wears off I'll make sure to post here. I've never used a screen cleaner on it or any liquid for that matter.

Well, here's one lol.

Although I wouldn't be sad if I had to remove my tints. They're from the factory and they suck tbh.

An IT department I used to work for used it liberally.

Though, they had all matte dell screens, and it did help kinda make a new surface for them and make them look new. I assumed they knew to only do it seldomly, and I think they only used ity when the screen looked to be trashed.
