PSU blew up, looking for a new one

Onw

Hello,

so my PSU blew up. I had a EVGA 550 B3, it was 2 years and 2 months since I bought it. Right now, I'd like something that would last longer. Is Seasonic focus GX 650 gold a good option?

Thanks for all replies!

CPU: R5 2600X

GPU: GTX 1050 Ti (might upgrade in the future, that's why 650W)

Hello,

It's a good option but you may have other good units available in your market for a similar or lower price. Also 550W is more than enough.

The Focus GX is fine, though I'd also look for a Corsair RMx or be quiet! Straight Power 11.

Also, 550W will be plenty, even with a GPU upgrade in mind.

B3 or supernova b3?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

That’s a possible issue then.   b3 supernova is B rated.

yeah, it's more that early batch b3 had issues with it's over power protection, and OP likely got one of these samples. the current b or even c rated units should have little to no risk of exploding, and current batch b3 doesn't have this, but older ones did. this is fully on EVGA/RSY's fault

So with this PSU it’s important to be able to tell an early batch from a late one.  How is that done?

Thanks for the reply! What other units should I look for? And alright, I'll take the 550W, it is 15 bucks cheaper, thanks!

Thanks for the answer! Alright, I'll grab some 550W. I really want something, with very little chance of failing on me again, I guess I'm willing to sped up to 100$, maybe little over.

Thanks! I'll get some 550W, as I wouldn't get a flagship GPU anyway. Will look onto the other options, thanks!

Thanks! My budget is around 100$, I'm from czech republic, so no amazon/newegg, just local czech retailers. What better units would you recommend?

personally, I'd grab

- formula gold if you don't plan to go much higher end than something like this

- neo eco gold if you want something that's expected to last around 5 years due to the fan

- amp/tp dps g/focus if you want something with a better fan, expected around 7-10 years

- straight power 11/gf1/revolution df/rmx if you want something more quiet with a similar life expectancy of the above

- straight power 11 platinum/ion+ if you want something more efficient with 80+ platinum

these aren't all options out there, this is just as far as pcpp US goes as of right now

WOW, and there I thought picking a PSU would be easy, well obviously, it is not. Thank you so much for all the tips! I found a straight power 11 550W for about 120$. Thank you very much, I'll pick it up, it also has that silent fan, which is amazing. You seem to know a lot about PSUs, should I somehow maintain it? I mean dusting the inside off together with the PC, turning it off for some time or something like that? Thank you very much once more!

regarding turning off or anything... not much you should do there, just let it run as usual and there's not really a problem to keeping it connected/turned on if you don't have the system powered on.

as for dusting out... you could use something like an air duster to blow it out from the outside when you clean your pc, but that's about it... I wouldn't recommend to open it when you do so, externally is fine

Point.  If the problem was it’s an early model warranty replace the thing and you’ll get a decent one. $0

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

You misunderstood the warranty.

MANUFACTURER'S warranty is supported by the manufacturer.  In the EU, the RETAILER is obligated to support that warranty for up to 2 years.

By saying the OP likely have the early batch of the B3, are you also saying the reason why the OP B3 blew up is due to the OPP not being implemented properly? If so, I feel that there's another issue that needs to be address.

What cause a system that draws around 225w-250wDC under synthetic load stock to have a load that should have trip the OPP which should be set around 715wDC+ (in this case more, since it wasn't properly configured)? It may not be a bad idea for the OP to do an one over (or two) at all of the components and PSU cables in case something had failed and shorted out.
