The Verge:

On both iOS and Android, Epic has introduced a new direct payment option. If you purchase V-bucks or anything else in the game through either the App Store or Google Play Store, it will cost the same as always. But the new direct option comes with the discount; when you select it, the game sends you to a payment screen where you can choose either a credit card or PayPal. “Currently, there are no savings if players use Apple and Google payment options, where Apple and Google collect an exorbitant 30 percent fee on all payments,” Epic says. “If Apple and Google lower their fees on payments, Epic will pass along the savings to players.”

how long has the timer been running since apple approved that update before they actually realise?

(because man i hope they go down that slippery slope and get the pushback from devs on selectively enforcing app store monetisation restrictions)

This is pretty big news. I doubt Epic Games managed to sneak this past Apple. So chances are they managed to convince Apple into accepting in-app payments. If they allow it for Epic, then maybe they will start opening it up for other apps too.

Definitely a perk of being too popular to remove from the app store. Preferential treatment is nothing new. Maybe we'll start seeing this on some other top grossing apps? It'll be interesting to see where this goes, but I wouldn't expect the small guys to be able to negotiate this any time soon.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I doubt this will go down well with Apple (that is, if they haven't worked out some deal behind closed doors). Both Google and Apple have certainly been hard on other apps trying to do the same thing. Then again, as BobVonBob says, it would make Apple very unpopular if they removed Fortnite from the App Store.

you know, after butting heads with Valve, i wonder what's Epic's strategy for mobile when it comes to forcing change on platforms that are owned by the first party publishers themselves (while Valve doesn't own Windows, Apple owns iOS and Google owns the Play Store (maybe less so Google since apps can be sideloaded on Android))

The stream running on the Fortnite Twitch channel is something else... I guess that's one way to approach things.
