Was your laptop part of one of the replace programs Apple warranted? Been a few series which get replaced for free.

It was under the anti-reflective coating which I had done in 2018. RE the replacement, they said that it would take my particular store 3 weeks for the replacement battery so they would just replace it instead.

Well it's the first time I find a protein related to the current global situation

The other ones that I've got are related to other diseases which is also really helpful but yeah, quite interesting

Well, I finally managed to get to some old GPUs that were on the whitelist for folding. (nvidia gtx 8800's)

The client sees them and I can add the GPU slots.  :)

But, it gets a 192 loop back address assigned to it to download from. :(

From everything I can tell, it seems like that means the assignment server says they're not supported anymore.  :(

Imagine starting up an old laptop as an extra contributor because it's the only other thing with dedicated graphics only to have OpenCL errors cancelling the GPU work unit :(.

Hopefully DDU will fix the issue.

I plan to leave my RX580 folding when this is over and maybe pickup a few cheap cards when I can do so to build a box with some GPU's that have good WU/Watt ratio running in the basement corner where it's cool.

I threw together a little rig to contribute. It's sitting right in front of my audio rack in the living room. I know it's not much but these RX480s have been on a shelf for over a year so I'm glad to put them to use.

I read somewhere that the 8000 series is no longer supported when wondering why my GT600 series keeps getting errors.

I believe it is a precision level issue, from my reading.  Would love for somebody to tell me I'm wrong and can somehow use them though.

Even if it wasn't a precision issue, they would just not be fast enough imo

Some nice thunder and lightning.  Thankfully my APC units are good to go.  The connection may drop due to some stuff not being fully covered further down the line, but the computing will continue as long as it isn't an extended outage.  At least…for the 1 WU on 1 of 4 machines that was able to get one.

@Gorgon I had an old (beige) 1500 from APC that was awesome and lasted forever…but eventually never thought any incoming voltage was within appropriate range, even when I altered the settings.  Maybe there's something simple I can go find to replace on the board.  Fortunately my newer ones have done fairly well so far, all but 1 being several years old now.

Always saw CyberPower as a cheaper product.  TrippLite seemed like something to look at, but also cheaper looking.  Who is actually GOOD at making a UPS that works and lasts these days?  I see mention of Eaton above, who is a name I know from other things, so I'll have to go research that some for the future…but haven't ever noticed them for sale when looking in the usual places.

My media centre PCs were getting a bit hot and shouty running 24/7 so I thought I'd give them a some room to breathe. Looks janky as all hell but they are a lot happier now and it's the most use that ironing board has had in quite a while!!

That's because unlike the APC/Tripp Lite and Cyber-Power instead of being line-interactive they are Single or Dual-conversion units and much more expensive ($400-$900 versus $130-$250)

The difference is Line-Interactive units only kick in and buck or boost the voltage when they see an under or over-voltage and if their not fast enough ... and Line-interactive units typically provide no protection other than MoVs when their batteries die but Line-Interactive do, they just don't provide juice when the power cuts out

Single and dual-conversion means the incomming power is always converted to DC then switched back to AC so the rectifier and inverters are always operating. Much better isolation from errors on the grid.

So…far better protection…but less efficient due to always having to double convert?  Or are they enough of a higher quality that even though the theory says they should be less efficient, they're basically not?
