Are 1080p monitors still worth buying?

Cheeky Bugger

So,i've been stuck on a 1650x1050 monitor for a veeery long time if i say so myself and i was thinking about picking up a new Full HD monitor, but i'm not sure if that is going to be a mainstream resolution for a much longer,4K monitors are getting quite a bit cheaper,so should i just save up for a 4K monitor and be ready for the time when 1440p and 4K will be mainstream,or i should just stick with 1080p for now, just for a reference the Acer Nitro RG240YBMIIX 24" is about 120$ and Samsung U28E590D 28" is about 260$.

1080p 144hz is, and will be for many years to come, the basis of any decent gaming pc.

2k and 4k are still niche and we are a few hardware generations off that changing.

Ask this again in 2022.

Well, it depends on what you would use the monitor for. If you do office work with no gaming or games that are not demanding then 4k would be the way to go. If you're a big gamer then 1440p with a high refresh rate is the sweet spot right now, although 1080p definitely is not dying anytime soon.

If you have to save up for a monitor, I'm going to guess you wouldn't have any money to upgrade your PC. If you can't drive 4k there isn't really a point to getting it IMO.

1080p would be a good match for you. If you think you're going to upgrade that GPU soon then go for a 144hz model.

I'm not into competitive gaming,so is maybe 75 hz Full HD a sweet spot for me?

But aren't 144 hz monitors useless if you are not hitting super high frame rates?

144hz is more than just for gaming. It makes the whole desktop experience much smoother.

Under 24" 1080 is fine, over and I wouldn't buy something less than 1440, refresh rate is mostly a personal thing, I can't tell any difference between 60 and 144 or higher. Pixel density and colour reproduction is higher on my list.

Silent build - You know your pc is too loud when the deaf complain. Windows 98 gaming build, smells like beige

I think that 144 hz is way overpriced,1080p 144 hz costs in my country 40 $ less then a 4K 28 inch monitor

What's the point if you can't run 4k?

144hz isn't overpriced; it's a performance segment, and as a result, will be priced higher. It's a smaller market.

Depends on the use case.

If you are doing office work, it's typically cheaper to have 2x or 3x 1080p IPS monitors, because a lot of software starts behaving strangely at HiDPI settings, and many people in offices use laptops or underpowered desktops without a dedicated GPU, which means that 4K is just barely possible on one monitor. Most people at the office have 22" 1650x1050 or 24" 1920x1080 monitors with the odd person or so somehow having a 1920x1200 monitor.

If you are primarily doing gaming, but not high end-gaming, The same 1080p IPS monitors are perfectly fine. However if you are doing high end gaming (eg 1080p@144hz, or 4K@60hz ) then the GPU requirements (minimum GTX 1080Ti) pretty much dictate how useful it will be. There are not enough games out there to justify the cost of a 4K HDR monitor, though you can certainly pick up a non-HDR 4K and get 60hz now, and it's about the same cost as 2 HD monitors of equivalent capability.

With that said, any 1080p monitor works as a TV in a pinch, and if you want to avoid "smarttv" BS that's the only way to go.

Cheap 4k monitors are generally on the crappy side.

I bought a 4K monitor. Tried Witcher 3. Balcony scene hit. Couldn't run it. Can't go back after seeing what 4K can do. Refunded Witcher, never tried again. Don't do it.

Mild /s

I'd prioritise quality and right screen size. Only way to get the best choice for yourself is to go to a store and see how different options actually feel. Could be the biggest screen you can afford, might be the fastest refresh even though you doubt it now. IPS is especially dope when you compare it side by side with lesser panels. Use the opportunity to value the stands, wobble will ruin the experience with any monitor. Brightness is the often unspoken, unexpected killer of good times, so keep an eye out for that too.

And when the smoke clears, man up and admit you're responsible for the seventeen deaths and 65 serious injuries this thread caused.

Have you thought about 1440p ultrawide monitors? The ASUS PG348Q is like half the price it was from a few years ago, so pretty good for what you get imo
