How to be motivated to go to the gym?

Hello everyone. 

 

I am in a situation where I need get motivated to go to the gym..My current weight is at 95KG, overweight by 20KG. I sit most of the days at home, I do not move as much as I should. I get up every 2 hours to the toilet or I eat more food. After that I either go back onto my PC or lay on my bed. The thing is, when I do go gym, I got for a couple of weeks then I loose motivation and I completely stop going at all. So how do gain my motivation back? I've asked my friends if they want to go, they all go to different gyms far from where I live. I do drink a lot of water during the day, I do not drink fizzy drinks, if I do I do not finish the can. 

 

I need some help. :( For anyone asking I'm in Harrow, UK.

hire somebody to kill you if you miss more than 1 day of going to the gym. 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

So I don’t go to the gym, but I have started a workout routine at home, and by now I probably would have quit except for this one thing I tell myself

 

just do it

 

legit, just do it, and make yourself happy about it, instead of thinking “oh I need to go to the gym” say “oh yes! It’s time to go to the gym” 

 

listen to your our favorite music on the way there, listen to your favorite music at the gym, and listen to music on the way back

Set your pc to not turn on if an activity tracker hasn't tracked enough activity that day.

Maybe listen to some music or watch a video/film at the gym. It'll make it much more enjoyable and you'll want to go.

Other than that, tell yourself you want to make a change. Tell yourself you need to make a change. Tell yourself whatever you have to in order to get you there, just as long as you don't go too far. 

I'm in the same situation as you but man, I've actually made quite a bit of difference from when I had no motivation to do anything other than lay in bed to now. I've only lost about 4-5kg so far (I just do regular walking, I'm not a fan of gyms) and I already feel better.

Do something more fun. Take a walk or bike ride around your area and explore all the different roads and shops. The more time you spend out of the house, the less time you have to eat snacks.

I just came back from a walk and found $3 worth of coins on the side of the road, so you can even find money or other stuff.

You gotta find something that makes you happy. Just try stuff out. I tried running for a year and it made me very sore. Than I found biking and now I bike about 2,500 miles a year and have lost 38lbs without really changing my diet. Just eat less sugar and drink more water

I'm in the same situation as you but man, I've actually made quite a bit of difference from when I had no motivation to do anything other than lay in bed to now. I've only lost about 4-5kg so far (I just do regular walking, I'm not a fan of gyms) and I already feel better.

Also, do something that works for you, a gym is not necessary

 

for example, I have found that my perfect workout is pushing myself until I can’t continue

 

ill do as many pull-ups as I can, until I cannot pull myself up more then an inch, then I drop and do as many sit-ups as I can until I can’t do it anymore, by then my arms are feeling better so I’ll do as many push ups as I can until I can’t get up past an inch

 

iys all about what you can handle, like mine, when I started I could barely do 10 push-ups before collapsing, but now I can get to 30 before collapsing (yeah I know, weak lol) 

 

just find what what you enjoy, and stick with it

Yeah, the first few days it hurts, but after a while you kinda get used to it and it is super effective, I’ve lost fat (never really had much, I workout to gain weight) and gained muscle instead, and if you just push through the first few days of pain and keep working out even if it hurts, then it works, trust me lol

Not too long. I only started 2 weeks ago and if I'm honest I have a really low metabolism. There are days when I don't do anything at all which isn't really ideal for my goal.

I'm quite good at cycling so maybe that's a thing I'll have to take up. I usually hate cycling because the seat is so uncomfortable but it's my best shot at losing weight.

I don't know about you, but I like buying stuff. And if I was in the same situation as you, I would purchase things that would help me work out: Nice exercise clothes, comfy running shoes, a new Fitbit, etc.

 

Also, it's worth noting the fact that stopping yourself from eating excessively helps A LOT with weight control. It sometimes has more of an impact than working out.

Do some form of exercise that isn't just going to the gym and doing repetitive workouts. I can't stand that either to be honest. Do something that's entertaining as well as physically demanding. I do rock climbing, if that's not your thing then you can play tennis, do kayaking, skate, do some off-road biking... find something that is fun for you.
