Microsoft is Infuriating. - Surface Studio 2 Review

When Microsoft said we wouldn't be carrying them in store (Microcenter) I was kinda bummed. But now I can kinda see why they didn't want us to. 7820HQ....really :c

I hate how good and bad this thing is.

Some day I would love to get a good display to draw on, but Wacom is making their stuff so expensive now (plus, you need USB type C to actually get 4K on the Cintiq Pro 16 apparently), that they are not even a viable option at this point.

I don't want to go to a FHD option, but you have a lot of MUCH cheaper options there. You can get screen display for under 300 USD at that resolution!

At this point I strongly dislike the grip Wacom has on the drawing display market, how other brands just keep on making budget options and how Microsoft just makes... This thing. A machine that is cool, but just should be a sole display instead of having a last gen laptop packed into it.

But I loved the video though :)

Thermals.

For the target audience, there isn't much reason to push more powerful CPUs that would just throttle to hell.

@Drak3 Yup makes sense and not much more clockspeed going to 8th gen and 0 IPC improvement.. just 2 more cores that'll throttle in that small (fanless?) package. EDIT: and they may have gotten a good deal on leftover 7th gen silicon.

Basically, it’s aimed for creative professionals with deep pockets.

No, it's aimed at creative professionals that can't afford an equivalent Wacom Cintiq AND a PC that can drive said Cintiq.

My thoughts are this product is probably aimed at the animation industry (esp. in Japan and South Korea) in which case they would probably be drawing and maybe some light 3D modeling on the side, in which case they could send the rendering off to dedicated servers. If that is the case then this machine has plenty of power, more than most of it's users would probably need even several years down the road.

a 1070 and 32 gigs of ram for a drawing tablet...ok I guess?

Is that what professional needs? An high end intel iGPU handles high screen resolution as well and has 1/5 the power consumption, the ram....
well... The ram??

Depending on what you're actually doing, and what programs you're running, you can benefit from the increase in performance and/or CUDA acceleration.

No one with a brain will buy this for using it as a regular workstation, as Linus said only drawers can appreciate this thing

Except for the screen, there is no other reason to buy this

That means nothing to me. It shouldn't mean anything to anyone with any type of understanding of tech above "it exists."

Is just useless, that cpu is a shame, and there are small modular cases that will save space and look good as well, if you are spending 4.000$ for anything else than that monitor you can just be tagged as a not very intelligent person, and you couldn't argue on that

That's a hyper threaded, quad core processor with a base clock of 2.9GHz, boost of 3.9GHz. Definitely powerful enough for most use cases it's made for.

The Cintiq Pro 24" touch alone is $2500. Cheap stand is $380. You have $1,320 to build an equivalent system, if we're going with the mid tier. That shrinks to $620 if looking at the base Studio.

While you can make that statement, you can't make it ring true. You're not the arbitrator of whether or not this system is a justifiable purchase, regardless if it is a complete mismatch to YOUR use case.

If your use case is wasting money and not getting a good value out of it when there are much valuable alternatives, yes.
Still you can and will probably be criticized

Side note: whoever made that crab rave video had to of been really bored, they also got it 100% wrong raves really start after the sun falls...

On topic:

I think Linus could have made a better build to insult Microsoft:

Plus $2,499.95 for the wacom, which is more expensive yes if you cut the ram in half it bring it down $180, which puts it at $500 more but should provide a way better experience for any creator.

I assume MS is licensing Wacom tech? (Or another similar company?) Part of the licensing deal might be no display ports allowed?
