definitly going to looki into those as well thanks!

Burning them out caching video in Large Scale Surveillance VMS Servers. The footage that comes in from 80+ cameras ends up being written by the VMS to the drives at least twice for caching, once when it comes in via RTSP and gets transcoded from whatever the camera is sending to MKV and then read from the disk when its analyzed for motion detection and rewritten again to disk before being shuttled off to the HDD arrays. I couldn't figure out why I was burning through the OS disks so often until i went and looked at the disk iostat and saw just how much writing was happening (between 70-125MBps [not Mbps] 24x7) The VMS software vendor says theres no way to prevent all the write cycles and recommends spinners because of this but then the spinners aren't fast enough even with 10k sas drives so im losing frames in the footage now which is frustrating. Short of spending thousands to cut the per server load in half duplicating hardware I'm hoping i can find SSDs that i only need to buy once to last several years that i can put on a planned obsolescence schedule. The samsungs actually do pretty well given according to their TBW rating they should burn out much quicker than they do (like 95-124 days) but its costly to keep replacing them constantly when you have 60+ of these servers on a site and when they go out unexpectedly youre having to rebuild the entire os or resilvering from a failing mirror drive.. rather just replace once with a drive that'll actually hold up. No idea how the little off the shelf DVRs dont have these issues but its quite annoying to deal with as an integrator and there arent many real world tests showing real SSD longevity testing sadly.

Gen3 isn't necessarily cheaper. If it is, great. I probably wouldn't buy Gen3 today given that Gen4 is as fast and usually faster (and more efficient) and can usually be found at the same price. Unless you're okay with DRAM-less drives and older hardware/flash. I question the reliability then, which is something most people won't compromise on. Although many Gen4 drives are also junky. And honestly, QLC isn't necessarily bad, there are cases I'd take it over TLC even.

In any case, looking at current availability (Amazon U.S.), the WD Blue SN580 is in a good spot. For $10 more or so you can get higher-end, the Crucial T500 has been $108 which is the deal to beat I think for 2TB + TLC. That was the Crucial site price though, but I think it hit $102 on Amazon at one point. Prices are on the way up however, and these are USD prices before tax.

For OP's sake, let's be more specific. In my hunt this year for an SSD, the pricing of pcie 3 vs pcie 4 tends to go this way:

    Gen 3 DRAM-less < Gen 4 DRAM-less < Gen 3 with DRAM < Gen 4 with DRAM

Some drives among the first 3 can have similar prices.

I personally don't recommend DRAM-less drives since they tend to not have as fast throughput (especially random IO) when comparing the same gen.

With pcie 4, you need to be more weary of their Temps, as they at minimum need some heat sink to prevent thermal throttle, whereas pcie 3 drives don't necessarily need a heating unless they don't have good air circulation, like the m.2 slot under my GPU.

If you are implying that pcie 3 is older hardware/flash, I mean someone else gave an example of 970 Evo Plus being iterated on in terms of controller & firmware over the years.

Its one thing to say that someone shouldn't look at SSD with older NAND like SLC or MLC, or has weak warranty/TBW, but it's a bit much to imply that pcie 4 has some huge forward looking benefit when there's no clear evidence of that unless perhaps OP really wants higher max random throughput, which can go up to break neck 1.5 million read IOPS.

Coil whine usually comes from internal vibration, at least in components common to current computers, and is notoriously difficult to track down to a specific component. Even if you got the right component, hot glue would do nothing but get hot glue all over your GPU.

Your one crazy little man, do not waste your money, an adapter from nvme to sata will just make your speedy nvme ssd turn into a slow sata ssd (3000mbs to 600..)
You wont have any space to put in that adapter and nvme ssd You dont need a heatsink for an ssd unless your basically editing on it 24/7, always reading and writing high amounts, it only helps with the performance when it is always, and i mean, always busy Your laptop doesnt support over 1tb of storage on any slot. so dont bother. Even if you do buy an nvme ssd, you have nothing to screw it down to on that laptop. You have 2 other ports on your laptop for storage, which are nvme, use those. also double check what keys you have and look up which each key means, then buy an ssd accordingly

The SN770 is TLC and a tad cheaper.  Not sure there is anything cheaper Gen 4.  Gen 3 is, and there won't be any difference for daily use/gaming.

Not sure if any nas structure supports rom drives as it primarily is for reading and writing information data, not displaying it. You'd have to dual boot it with another os which supports video/audio codecs.

You'd have to copy the entirety of the phone onto either a cloud service(very long to do on the phone) or hook up to your pc and copy and paste essentially. Then you hook up your pc to the new iphone. you can ask the 02 employees how to do that, they may have a easier solution

Probably because this is a 10 year old chip, and wasn't a particularly good one when it was released. Personally I wouldn't be running Windows on this machine, it's simply too heavy for that CPU.

    Hi there,

Have you considered going down the refurbished route?

I recently purchases a handful of Microsoft Surface Pro 4's, all for a smidge over £200 each including the detachable keyboard. Not sure how much the stylus's are but I'm sure you could pick one up from eBay for pretty cheap.

The specs I purchased were as follows:

    Core i5-6300U
    8GB Ram
    256GB SSD

So not bad for 200 quid and it had a Win 10 Pro license. And the only visible damage was a few scuffs and some wear and tear on the keyboard.

I think the company was called backmarket but I am UK based.

abcdefghivjklmnop reacted to Middcore in Help with listing this at a fair price
Yeah you're waaaaay overpriced here, I'm afraid. The core components that will determine performance for most people (CPU and GPU) will have you topping out at 1080p/60fps/medium settings in newer games, and you can buy or build a system that hits that same mark for around half as much. The extra RAM isn't really going to be relevant to your buyers, nor the beefy PSU. There's a market for secondhand Asus Maximus/Crosshair boards but it's not going to make this system run any better.

You would probably get more money out of parting it out on eBay than trying to sell it as a complete system. You don't have $1000 worth of value here though either way.

just use nvenc in obs or anything that supports it and lets you stream, record and etc, it will slightly affect your performance but not as much as software encoding/cpu. better off experimenting, than buying an extra few bucks for something you might not use later on

    Welcome to the forums!
Yike, sounds like you *might* have bricked your mobo. The fully ethical thing to do would be to contact support and tell them you had a BIOS flash go bad and see if they can help you. The morally grey thing to do would be to contact support and say your board was DOA and see if they can help you recover it, if (when) they can't, they should RMA it
