Plan for i7 Desktop Buy

youthfulrick

Heyo! I’m trying to buy a basic build that can sustain most loads I chuck at it.

Budget (including currency): I’m working with about $400-$500NZD ($250-$300USD)

Country: New Zealand

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: DaVinci Resolve, Half-Life (the original), Portal 2, and some Shooters (Valo, Overwatch, etc.)

Other details

I am currently looking at a prebuilt Dell Optiplex with an i7-8700, 16gb of ram, a 512gb ssd and a 1TB HDD for $400NZD ($250USD) on Trademe (New Zealand’s eBay). And I already have a AMD Radeon HD 7870 card that I’m going to put in it.

Would this be sufficient?
Also, not sure if this is important, but my current machine is a 2012 MacBook Pro running bootcamp with an i7-3615QM and a GeForce GT650M.

8700 is a decent CPU still. The 7870 is ehh... may have some problems in newer games, I believe it should be fine in Valorant as a friend still manages to use an R9 290X for that, but I don't know if OW has changed compatibility with older cards given the change to OW2. It should be better than the iGPU if the games you play support it, but it's 11 years old now and the last driver update was mid last year, so it won't get any better. If you can't get your hands on anything better then just run it. I'm not familiar with the NZ used market, in the US you can get AMD RX400/500 series cards and Nvidia Pascal (1000 series) quite cheap.

spend an extra 100 and get a blazing 5600g wtih 1tb ssd and 16gb of ram, much more possibilites to upgrade from there. also make sure the psu can supply enough power to the 7870
