Need help with tablet choice for study

Hello, my dearest Lithuanian tech tips,

I have got an offer for uni and accepted it, into comp science(hurray), I have a laptop but need a tablet for note taking and stuff.

My budget is below 250 USD/euro as I am in Europe and no baller.

The specs I need are:

A decent CPU, 6GB+ of RAM, 64GB+ of storage, over 9 inches聽馃槈, active stylus support?聽

The options i found are:聽

Realme Pad聽

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

Lenovo Tab m10 plus but only 4gb of ram 馃槥

Lenovo tab p11/plus

Honor pad 8聽

Xiaomi redmi pad

A blackview tablet(my dad had a blackview phone and it worked ages so its a decent brand)

I need active stylus support because I want to take notes obviously, but found out there are apps with palm rejection, which is essentially what I need, but the question remains, Do I need an active stylus if there's palm rejection involved in the apps themselves, like Nebo or can i choose the bottom 2 choices also as a potential buy and just buy a passive stylus?聽

Could thee help out in this question.

Hi there,

Have you considered going down the refurbished route?

I recently purchases a handful of Microsoft Surface Pro 4's, all for a smidge over 拢200 each including the detachable keyboard. Not sure how much the stylus's are but I'm sure you could pick one up from eBay for pretty cheap.

The specs I purchased were as follows:

Core i5-6300U

8GB Ram

256GB SSD

So not bad for 200 quid and it had a Win 10 Pro license. And the only visible damage was a few scuffs and some wear and tear on the keyboard.

I think the company was called backmarket but I am UK based.

For note taking, I really like e-ink displays:

Lenovo Thinkbook Gen 1 or 2.

Various Onyx Boox devices (android)

Pine Note (Pine64)

You could also try finding a laptop woth a transflective lcd screen:

Toshiba Portege S5007V.聽 PCMag.com mentions there are five other models with transflective display, but S5003 does not have it.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.聽 Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.聽 They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.聽 Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

Software suggestions

Just get f.lux [Link removed due to forum rules] so your screen isn't bright white at night, a golden orange in place of stark 6500K bluish white.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.聽 Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).聽 Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.聽 Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).聽 RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.聽 I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!聽 I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.聽 This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.聽 Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
