PathfinderNC reacted to Ethnod in An Australian researcher has worked out how to store 1000TB on a CD
Well this is interesting, it actually is lol (PS I actually searched the forum and found nothing on this, I know its an old story)
So we all know data is an issue, we are producing a huge amount of it (although I did not know that 90% of all data we have stored was produced in the last 2 years which is very surprising but any way) and eventually we are going to have issues storing it. Well looks like optical media might be the way forward… surprisingly

A researcher in Australia, Dr Zongsong Gan, has managed to write 1000TB onto a DVD back in 2013 (not sure why the article headline says CD). I am only seeing this now because he just won a fellowship.

Ok so how it works is actually pretty ingenious. So up until this research was made public it was believed that there was a physical barrier known as the diffraction limit of light which meant that light cannot be split any smaller than around 500 nanometres and because of this it was thought that light wasn't capable of writing bits of information smaller than 500 nanometres across. And while you may start to think that Gan somehow broke that broke that physics barrier he did not, the world has not changed Gan used 2 different coloured lights (red to write and purple as an excluder) to restrict the area that could be written down to 9 nanometres across, extremely impressive tbh.

The two main reasons the story is cropping back up is because of the fellowship but also because seems that this team will start working with other researchers and industry to start using this new discovery in more practical ways

PathfinderNC reacted to Semper in Issues With The LTT Community
If I don't know an answer, or don't trust that I know it fully, I do my best to research the topic.
I'm fairly new around here (new community member, relatively new LTT subscriber (a little over a year), long time watcher (6+ years). That said, this is one of the more mature tech related communities that i've been a part of. my first post here was about a pair of entry-level audiophiles. Aside from one post trolling with beats, I actually got some very sound advice that allowed me to make an informed decision and ultimately, end up with my DT 770's, which I don't regret in the least.
I see plenty of threads that get wildly different answers, but in some cases, two polar opposite answers can be reached, and be valid, because of a user experience.
I try to provide sources of additional information if relevant, or provide links to where I got my information.
Sometimes, however, my answer is simply from my experience, no more no less.
It is unfortunate, but it is part of the internet that you get those one-off responses multiple times in the same thread, if you get anything at all.
If you can't accept that (and proceed to ignore), honestly, you probably shouldn't be on a forum. It's an unfortunate reality of anonymity behind a screen.

Well, on the ASUS side you can push a 270 beyond 270x stock clocks. However it uses budget vram and so the memory won't OC as well as a sapphire probably will. Without unlocking anything, mine is OC'd through Afterburner to 1125 & 1500 from 975 (factory oc) & 1400. I can push the core farther especially with some sort of bios hack but I have no need to for now. The Sapphire 270 or the MSI are the best options for high OC'ing IMO.

PathfinderNC reacted to TopWargamer in I have a legitimate question about religion (more so Christianity)
Please people, no flame wars. I'm NOT making this thread for the intention of making people upset. On the contrary, I actually want an answer to a question that I've asked myself for quite a while. Please read the entire post to fully understand what I'm trying to say.
Please and thank you. Now let's have a civilized discussion.

To start, I will embed a picture of this Facebook post that just showed up in my profile feed.

Think about it for a second. He does have a point. I myself am a Christian, a..."loose" one, but still a Christian none the less. So if you want to say that I have a bias, then fine, go ahead, although I try my best to look at things objectively.

I've seen this before first hand, and it doesn't make much sense to me. America is a land of religious freedom, yet if you say "Oh hey, I'm a Christian" some people will immediately start bashing you for it. Am I saying most people will do this? NO! I am NOT saying that at all. But that kind of mindset makes no sense to me.

Like, I realize that there are some Christians who can be...hm...annoying, to say the least. I get that, and I understand that, and I can understand why you would dislike somebody for that, but you have to realize that not all Christians are like "that one annoying Christian 'freak' that you met the other day."

So with that being said, I've noticed that some people who hate on Christianity don't seem to necessarily hate on other religions. I don't ever recall (from personal experience) somebody bashing Islam or Buddhism or Shintoism or whatever. The only other religion that I've seen get bashed on as much as Christianity is Judaism, but that's a topic for another time, although still relevant to the discussion.

So why is this? Because it honestly doesn't make any sense to me. For example, let's say...an Atheist starts bashing on Christianity. Okay fine, but that same Atheist won't bash on other religions. Again, I've seen this more than once, and it just doesn't make any sense to me. Oh, and to clarify, I am NOT saying that most Atheists are Christian-bashers. Nononono, I'm not saying that all. I'm just using that as an example, because it seems to happen most with Atheist, from my personal experience. I personally do NOT have a problem with Atheists, so please do not misunderstand me.

I personally don't care what you worship or lack thereof. I'll tolerate what you believe and let that be that. I just don't get why people can't be this way? I'm not saying that Christians are absent from this. Oh nononono, certainly not. There are plenty of Christians and other religions guilty of this. But like...in America...ya know...freedom of speech...freedom of religion...freedom of assembly... (I know that plenty of other countries have all of these rights as well, just focusing on America for this thread). So with these rights being in place, I just do not understand why people bash what other people believe. Just tolerate it and move on. It's that simple! No matter you tell that person, they more than likely won't change their mind anyways.

I guess you the rule "People who sign up day of just to win something shouldn't be a thing." should be introduced, post count doesn't matter too much. In the end it's all up to the criteria given to Linus from LG, then he can mark-off different rules for the community.

The "X4 Electrically" means it functions as a regular X16 slot, but only have 1/4 of the amount of data pins.
There are 82 pins that make up the full PCI-E X16 slot. Pins 1-3 are the +12v power pins that provide the power to whatever is in the expansion slot.

    PCI-E X1 -- pins 1 - 18 are present
    PCI-E X4 -- pins 1 - 32 are present
    PCI-E X8 -- pins 1 - 49 are present
    PCI-E X16 -- pins 1 - 82 (all) are present

    @legendareN
Your motherboard support AMD Crossfire. The minor issue of running a Card in a PCI-E X4 slot, is that it may not perform at 100% as it is limited by the slot itself. Depending on the card, the performance hit may be only a few percent.
I'm not 110% certain how much of an impact a X4 slot will have on a R9-290, but you should be okay regardless.

That probably contributes to the problem. Water-cooling is sensitive to ambient temperatures.

The 4770k is a bit of an inconsistent chip regarding OCing. Your mileage will vary.

Yea make sure your psu puts out enough wattage and amperage on the 12v rail(s) for those 770s.

PathfinderNC got a reaction from Torand in Intel + Mantle = ?
It would appear Intel has an urge to jump deeper into the GPU manufacturer's market, adding another to the line-up alongside NVIDIA and AMD.

Intel has approached AMD about access to its game-boosting Mantle technology, an AMD executive said Friday.

Intel, for its part, confirmed that it has indeed asked AMD for access to the Mantle technology, for what it referred to as an "experiment". However, an Intel spokesman said that it remains committed to what it calls open standards like Microsoft's DirectX API.

So why Mantle? Is the "experiment" perhaps the workings of another API ... Intel's version of Mantle or Apple's Metal API?

So far, the fight has been between AMD and Nvidia, which combined sold about 33 percent of the GPUs sold during the second quarter, according to Jon Peddie Research. The remaining two-thirds of the market is owned by Intel, which hasn't publicly committed to an architecture-specific API.

"I know that Intel have approached us for access to the Mantle interfaces, et cetera," Huddy said. " And right now, we've said, give us a month or two, this is a closed beta, and we'll go into the 1.0 [public release] phase sometime this year, which is less than five months if you count forward from June. They have asked for access, and we will give it to them when we open this up, and we'll give it to anyone who wants to participate in this."

An Intel spokesman confirmed that it had made the request, but downplayed any Intel-specific low-level API plans.

What do you think Intel is up to now? Would another new API be a good thing or is it better to focus on the ones we already have? Let me know what you think or if I misread anything.
