We told you we’d do it, and here it is! Testing a whackload of HDMI 2.1 and 2.0 cables to find out if you’ve been wasting your money on cables for no good reason.

Data from tests is attached to this post. If you are an educator or otherwise have a legitimate reason for wanting to look at the .json files from each test I will provide them, but shoot me a DM. For most people the PDF results will be more than enough.

I have a 240hz monitor and its hard for me to go back to 144 but you get used to it after using 144hz for a week or two.
60Hz is possible too but not for competitive games, I just finish botw on a 4k 60hz monitor but games like apex I simply can't play on 60hz.

Any adapter card that supports more than one nvme ssd either has to use a chip that behaves like a network switch, combining the signals from multiple nvme SSDs pci-e lanes into the pci-e lanes available in your slot) OR relies on your motherboard supporting bifurcation to split the lanes available in the pci-e slot into multiple groups of pci-e lanes.

The ones with switch chip are expensive because the chip itself is expensive. There's not many manufacturers that produce such chips. The chips take 4, 8 or 16 pci-e lanes and create a number of pci-e lanes which can be arranged by designer of adapter into groups, let's say 2 groups of 4 pci-e lanes or 4 groups of 4 pci-e lanes.

The ones without chip simply take the existing pci-e lanes in the slot, and route 4 lanes at a time to each m.2 connector, and rely on the motherboard (the bios) to support a feature called bifurcation... using that feature, the bios can detect and properly configure those 4 ssds as if they're in 4 separate pci-e slots,  not as using different pci-e lanes from same slot.
So these only work if the pci-e lanes are electrically there in the slot. There are pci-e x16 slots (physically) that have only 4 pci-e lanes (electrically). In such case, the first m.2 connector on the adapter board will be wired to the first 4 pci-e lanes in the slot (and only ones) and the remaining 3 m.2 connectors will not be connected to any pci-e lane (because there aren't any more lanes in the slot)

This is the reason why the cheap adapters you find are for two SSDs, only one nvme and one SATA only.  The adapter is pci-e x4, meant to be plugged into a pci-e x4 slot, so it routes the 4 pci-e lanes directly to the first m.2 connector.
It doesn't rely on your motherboard to have bifurcation to split the 4 pci-e lanes into 2 groups of 2 pci-e lanes, it doesn't even try.
The 2nd m.2 connector is for sata only because the second m.2 connector only gets power from the pci-e slot. The data goes directly to the sata connector on the adapter board and you're supposed to use a sata cable between the adapter board and the sata connectors on the motherboard to transfer data.

most likely, it will not like that.
if you could use or reform the holes to fit motheboard standoffs then you could.

or as above, but still not the best way to do it, although you can likely put as much insulating that you need.

If those are new WD Blue drives I believe those are SMR drives so I would not recommend using RAID 5. Additionally RAID 5 does not off the best data protection possible, if offers "okay" redundancy under 6 drives or so.

If you are using SMR based drives and want good redundancy I'd strongly recommend at least mirrored setup (RAID 1).

To create a simple NAS you need a basic PC and I'd recommend getting an LSI HBA or something. A good amount of RAM is recommended if you are using something with L1 caching capability.

Most of the people I know are flipping to either 2.5/5/10gbe networking these days so its not a bad idea for future proofing especially how cheap its gotten lately. Four drives are not going to come close to saturating that but if you have some decent caching on your NAS it might help a bit.

Depending on your choice of OS you can RAID drives together with solutions like Storages Spaces, ZFS, UnRAID, or a plethora of others.

Then ontop of that hardware RAID where you would have a dedicated physical controller do the work is also an option. There's pros and cons to each solution.

RAID5 is your cheapest fault tolerant option. Depending on what RAID solution you go with though this can have a noticeable performance impact.

Id probably just geto one big drive and back it up

    Yea should work fine.

Yea it will conect, you will be drive speed limited though, so don't expect too much, esp after its been used for a bit.

no problem... I thought that might could be an issue, yeah. But did you try to actually press ctrl + F while in Afterburner, im not actually sure voltage control needs to be unlocked for the curve editor to work, although it is likely.

Otherwise yeah, power limiting should achieve almost the same.

The cooler itself isn't that amazing but 80-83 C under load is fine on graphics cards. Replacing the paste is easily enough and could lower temps a bit, so could adjusting the fan curve in MSI Afterburner. I'd not mess with voltages on an unknown brand card without a reference point from someone. Again, those temps are completely safe.
  13. Informative
Ero reacted to Mark Kaine in How to undervolt my GPU.
you need to unlock voltage control in Afterburner, then press ctrl + F that opens the curve.  try doing something like this. Start at around 900mv or so...

and then you need to test it with something like heaven benchmark.

if it isn't stable adjust the curve accordingly - that may be a bit tricky but generally it's really easy and brings temps down a lot.

I recently did it for the first time, performance actually went up! cause temps are lower it'll keep boost longer (indefinitely it would seem)

RTX 3070, keeps boost at around 1950 MHz, temps around 55c, voltage is very low around 750mv, you'll probably end up around 900mv though, which is still fine, but you have to experiment and find that out with your card obviously.

Simply put, you'd want to do signal converting as small as possible, or even not at all, to prevent quality loss.
DVI-D is a digital signal-only, so go for HDMI. You'd just convert it from digital to analog if you go for DVI-D to VGA, which is ridiculous to do anyway lol

    Last Update: 27-07-2021

    Legend :
Gray - EoL/obsolete and/or otherwise not recommended for purchase.
Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs)
Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier A)
Blue - quiet operation under moderate load (see details in the spreadsheet)
Hyphen / Dash - Series / lineups separator
Slash - Models (inside one series) separator
Parenthesis / Round brackets - Model variations (which belong to the same position)
Square brackets - Additional description (wattage range, part of SKU code, label / casing color, release year)
Numbers in red colored square brackets - footnotes, see descritptions at the end of respective tiers
Low priority subtiers - Lack of info (no reviews) or minor issues (see the corresponding tab in the spreadsheet). Not recommended for purchase over any normal priority units.
Multi-rail units - Not necessarily better than single-rail units but provide an extra layer of protection by having 12V OCP set lower than total capacity, which is especially relevant for very high capacity units (=>1kW). Pay attention to rails configuration when using with high power draw components to avoid shutdowns.

See spreadsheet for changelog, methodology, detailed description of colors, review sources, notes on grayed-out units including issues like GPU incompatibility or quality and performance issues, and other additional info.

[8] Seasonic PRIME based units experience shutdowns with RTX3080/3090 (and possibly RX6900 XT) GPUs, especially ones with unlocked power limit like FE and ASUS Strix. It is recommended, if going with such units, to overprovision wattage, 1kW for RTX3080 and 1.2kW for RTX3090, or power-limit the GPU, or performing a 'dirty' fix of disconnecting a pin of 12V V-sense wire from PSU-side connector of 24-pin motherboard cable (courtesy of Jonny Guru). Units based on post-2018 revisions of Seasonic Focus platform and majority of units by other OEMs are not affected.

[1] MWE V2 units have high ripple issues on very low load also resulting in increased coil whine, fix pending.
[2] High wattage CWT GPX based units have problems with failing burn-in test under sub 90VAC input, treat as 230V only, (Jonny Guru).
[3] Units experiencing tripping issues with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega and high-end nVidia Ampere.
[4] Two versions of Segotep GP-G exist, older v1 version is non-LLC resonant and they're very hard to extinguish externally, hence model tiering based on v1.

For a desktop drive you'll need a USB HDD Enclosure since it will need an external power brick to power the drive but yes, it will work fine.

This type typically works only for 2.5" drives, you need to make sure to get one that supports 3.5" ones if that's what you have. They'll have an additional power supply you need to plug in to the wall. USB2 or 3 doesn't matter.

No problem, if the Bios is running a version that supports your 3rd gen Intel CPU then you can post back on here for additional help.

Well the H61 was released for 2nd gen Intel CPU's, so 3rd gen is compatible ONLY if the bios has been updated, you need to verify that.
