Is it really difficult to go back to 144Hz/60Hz after playing on 240Hz for competitive games?

KyberKylo77

I just ordered an Acer XB273UGX since it was on sale for about $560. Now I'm kinda having second thoughts because in the future I'd want to upgrade to a higher resolution ultrawide for productivity and i doubt high refresh rate options will be cheap so id probably have to go back to 144Hz which is a bit worrying because its really difficult for me to play at 60Hz after having experienced 144Hz so just wanted to know if its similar with jumping to 240Hz.

Going from 144Hz to 280Hz was somewhat noticable. But the gap between 60Hz and 144Hz is much more noticable than 144Hz to 240Hz (280Hz)

I would never go back to 60Hz/75Hz if possible at all.

It's hard for me to go back to using another monitor after using my MSI that I bought in 2018 or so... wow it was a luxury then. 1080p 144hz with FreeSync and a <1ms response time... And a nice wide color gamut. My PC at the time couldn't even handle it. But it's very hard to go from that back to a 60hz monitor (say I come home from school on a holiday, etc) but the difference is most noticeable for me since my monitor at home is a 1360x768/60hz model which may as well be 8-bit color its contrast is so bad.

not hard for me , high refresh rates were a 90s thing and it really did nothing for me i was more interested in the games themselves than the refresh rates

Would you be able to go back to 144Hz for extended periods of time?

yea lol I cant go back to 60Hz too after trying out 144Hz. Even on singleplayer games like life is strange its really jarring to play at 60 FPS. Usually i turn down a couple of settings until im at least hitting 90 FPS

I have not tried for a lot time 144Hz tbh ... but I know 60Hz very well and that is not acceptable. Hertz me to think about 60Hz...

Same, played some diablo 2 teh past 2 weeks, and there is no getting used it (coming from 120/144Hz), my eyes hurt, my head hurts, i feel sick, i feel slugish, the controls don't listen to me, everything is late. It feels like trying to play basketball very drunk after no sleep for a week.

I have a 240hz monitor and its hard for me to go back to 144 but you get used to it after using 144hz for a week or two.

60Hz is possible too but not for competitive games, I just finish botw on a 4k 60hz monitor but games like apex I simply can't play on 60hz.

i think gsync was acting up with 2 monitors so i switched to 60hz for a bit for netflix, forgot to switch back, launched a game, think it was borderlands 3, during one of the battles i had to move from side to side on 60hz, it actually felt like a sudden stutter as something i wasn't expecting, but in reality it was just 60hz, it was bad lol.

You'll notice, though definitely avoid 60Hz.

If you want to continue playing competitive games, where the high refresh 1080p monitor is king, you will probably have to go for two monitors. Moving to a 1440p ultrawide will reduce your frame rate by a lot over 1080p, even if you could get one that could do 240Hz. And for productivity, you'd probably be better off with 4K over an ultrawide as you'll get more pixels for your money, but will reduce FPS even further.

For competitive games i'd definetly prefer my 200Hz monitor over a 144Hz one. Just recently i changed the refresh rate of my 200Hz monitor to 144Hz to try something out and even on my desktop something immediately felt "off" with my mouse movement.

I've also been playing a lot of Dark Souls lately and all of these games are locked to 60fps by the engine with no way to increase it without 3rd party software. And tbh for singleplayer games i'm still fine with 60Hz if it's consistently at 60 and there are no drops. But even in singleplayer games i prefer 90+fps if the engine allows for it. And luckily my 3080 has no problem putting out enough frames with a 3440x1440 monitor.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

ahh thats interesting. I just got my Acer XB273UGX and when booted it up i didnt immediately notice the difference on windows like i did before with 144Hz. It took me a while to see the difference and thats between switching back and forth (144Hz and 240Hz). In game the difference is definitely more apparent but 144Hz still felt really smooth but 240Hz just felt that extra bit smoother and more responsive. With all that being said, im probably gonna sell/return this monitor and get myself a dell S3422DWG because 240Hz wasn't as big of a jump as I initially expected it to be even though i knew it wouldn't as game changing as going from 60 to 144.

For me the jump from 144Hz to 200Hz is not really visually different.

It just feels more responsive. And that's what i felt when going back to 144Hz.

They seem quite similar apart from these differences:

The Asus has a much higher contrast, a slightly more aggressive curve, has a higher refresh rate, better I/O, has speakers (if that matters to you), but is more expensive.

Both seem to be mid-range VA-ultrawides with mediocre response times.
