I would recommend you to check this list. Higher is better.

Still works and nothing wrong with it. I have it since 2013.

Years before I built my desktop PC and I used to game on my laptop. The CPU and GPU would both reach 95C and throttle the performance since 95C was the temperature limit. I cleaned the fans, replaced the thermal paste and it only dropped to 93C... Gaming on a laptop is just not a good idea, high temperatures are to be expected since you can't have proper cooling and air flow inside a laptop. Laptops are designed to run at hot temperatures anyway, so your components won't get damaged.

You could become a sailer and see the seven seas. The last time I've seen someone mention that, it was still illegal. But still, depends on your morality.

MysteriousAeon got a reaction from The Pizza Thief in Upgrading from a GTX 970 in 2019 ?
I had a R9 390 which is the equivalent of a GTX 970. It died and I got a brand new GTX 1080 for 548 bucks. Bad price, I know, but normally its sold for 913 bucks in my country. It's a very nice upgrade and it's very much worth it. Get a GTX 1080 or an RTX 2070, whichever is cheaper. I don't think 2070 is worth it if the price difference is big.

Test the memory (RAM) one by one and see if the GPU works. Try testing the GPU on another computer.

I don't miss those days at all,  a handful of choices from barely better than onboard to more than a weeks pay.  No thanks.

Today we have it awesome, even a $150 card can play the latest games acceptably if you turn of unneeded options like shadows etc.   And if you have a little bit more to spend you can actually buy something that is a little bit better, unlike before when you had to basically double your budget or stick with crap.

This is a good video and channel for beginners. The info in this video would go for most Linux distros, but in this case, it's for Ubuntu.

The I7 4790K is still really good, if anything is holding that rig back its the 970. Anyway just plug all the screens into the 970, it's not going to hurt performance

    a 10 year old?

teach him to save his money and be patient. no 10 year old is going to have fun just staring at a lone motherboard in a box. heck put him to work and have him earn it.

not going to get a lot of people here on board with the " buy a single part every month" plan

I used to live on the newsgroups back in the day, when I had no money at all.  Almost everything I got was pirated.  Still have boxes full of CD's and DVD's and stuff.  Now with the advent of GOG and DRM free games, and since I'm doing a bit "better" financially now (still not doing great though) I now just buy all my PC games.  I will still pirate applications however.  Not spending $2,000 dollars for Keyshot Pro--nope and nope.  And console games...I'll buy the AAA stuff usually and flashcard the rest (only thing I have is a DS Lite).

    I'm a dirty person I guess

And I believe there's nothing wrong with getting backups of things you already own, e.g. cracking the copy protection of a game you actually bought, or downloading an emulated ROM of a game you purchased in a 'retro remake' package on MAME, etc.
