Art of Server has at least one other vid on counterfeits as well. I learned about em when I was looking at what HBA to get for TrueNAS, that's why I picked a single listing card with an authenticity sticker visible on it in the photos, that I could cross-check to confirm it was legit.

There are also USB Drives that work for DVD And Blu Ray as well.  (IDK About UHD Tho, I haven't looked into it)

5.25" drive and MakeMKV. I dunno how to parse the file system on DVDs either, I just pull the large files as those will be the video ones, the menu stuff is in the megabytes not gigabytes.

The 7800X3D really is going to be the best pick here. It's going to be good enough for basic video editing and most general office work, but for gaming it's in a whole other league compared to anything Intel has in pretty much anything but Final Fantasy and Starfield while drawing less than half the amount of power. Where Intel shines is when you need multi core performance for more advanced video editing and other workstation tasks, but since you aren't really doing that, the 7800X3D really is the better pick.

If you're going 7800X3D, the RAM doesn't really matter all that much. Ideally, you'll get a kit rated at 6000 CL30 or 6000 CL32 (the brand does not matter for this, everything performs identically so just get something cheap), though this isn't as big a deal as it is with other Ryzen chips.

    Yes
Not really, there's budget arguments to be made below $200 for LGA 1700 and for some very specific games/applications, a 14900k will beat out a 7950x/x3D, but usually at substantially higher power draw. Unless there's a reason to not go with AMD specifically, then the 7800x3D is unfortunately the default choice for high end gaming. Almost no one needs the 7950x3D, but there are few, and those consumers usually don't have to ask, so 7800x3D it is.

2x16GB 6000MHz CL30 30-36-36-76 kits are usually the best value in 2024. Low and tight timings, 6000MHz being the sweet spot for performance/stability on Ryzen 7000. In general, CL30 ktis will be 30-38-38-96 or 30-36-36-76, the lower and tighter being the best.

Regarding a specific link, you'll have to be more specific since I generally stick to lower profile non-RGB RAM which isn't the norm in 2024.

Be wary, these are very commonly cloned (same with Intel NICs). I'd avoid listings like that with a bunch, look for one that says in the description that it was pulled from a server, and preferably one with an authenticity sticker you can double-check to confirm it's a real unit. That's what I did for mine, flashed it to IT-Mode myself, it works fine. Clones can be shoddy quality so you can run into issues with them.

Zando_ reacted to colonel_mortis in Two thousand year old scroll decoded using machine learning
    Summary

Several paragraphs of text have been decoded from the inside of a scroll that was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. These scrolls were too fragile to physically unroll, so researchers took high resolution CT scans of the scrolls, and released the data to the public, promising $700,000 to the first team to decode 4 passages from the inside of the scroll, based on the scan (along with a number of other prizes along the way), before the end of 2023.

    My thoughts
This is an achievement that could only have been done with machine learning, and the technical feat here can't be understated. It has taken a lot of work to get this far, it's incredible to see what the community can achieve when it's given a goal like this. The $1M+ prize pool (donated by various mostly rich people) certainly helped to incentivise people to participate, and it will be interesting to see if this model gets adopted for any other projects in the future. If they are able to achieve their goal of extending this technology to read all 800 scrolls, this will be a big breakthrough in our understanding of Ancient Rome, let alone the other potential places where this technology could be used.

Not sure what I'm looking at in those screenshots.

In general, there is a phenomenon with silicon called thermal runaway. In short, the hotter it is, the more power it uses to do a certain thing, which means it gets hotter, which means it takes more power. Repeat until either the magic smoke escapes, or some safety mechanism kicks in to stop the cycle. On CPUs, that would be thermal limiting as a last line of defence.

Not quite clear what you're asking. Are you wondering why it pulls more power when under more load? What stress tests are you running?

The 7000 series from AMD is actually designed to run at 95c 24/7 and anything under that is just a bonus.

The X58 board and i7-930 should run Fortnite just fine if paired with a decent GPU.

But I would strongly advise you to upgrade from that underwhelming 4C/8T i7-930 to a 6C/12T Xeon for pennies. The Xeon X5650, for instance, can be purchased on AliExpress for a only $1.82 USD (plus another $1.77 in shipping)!

There are 3 6C/12T Xeons I currently recommend:

$1.82 USD - Xeon X5650. 2.67 GHz base clock, turbo frequency at 3.06 GHz. Locked multiplier, but most can be BCLK OC'd to 4 GHz on a generic air cooler unless you lose the silicon lottery really badly. Unbeatable value for the cost of a Big Mac from McDonald's. Remember - this was a $999 USD MSRP CPU back in 2010!

$4.58 USD - Xeon X5675. Basically the same CPU with better binning, as it runs at 3.06 GHz base and turbos up to 3.46 GHz. The extra money really just ensures you get a better-binned CPU that should be able to break 4 GHz, whereas some X5650's just can't do it.

$14.02 USD - Xeon W3680. This is the Xeon equivalent of the i7-980. Unlike the above 2 CPUs, the multiplier is unlocked and is slightly easier to OC. Even better stock clock at 3.3 GHz and turbo frequency up to 3.6 GHz.

At this point though all 3 CPUs are 14 years old and differences between their performance are borderline irrelevant given how much faster modern hardware is. I'd personally just get the X5650 and call it a day. Most people back in the day could hit 4 GHz on air cooling stably with the X5650 anyways.

Finally, there's a long-standing Xeon X58/X79/X99/X299 HEDT thread on the LTT forums that's been going strong for 6 years. I highly encourage you to check it out as there's a wealth of information in there, including a few snippets from yours truly. @Zando_ if you're still around much these days, thanks for maintaining the thread for so long 🙂

Don't need one, Ryzens can run on teeny heatsinks. I've had up to a 3700X on the tiny stock Wraith stealth cooler from a 2200G without issue. Especially as you can power limit the chip in the BIOS if you are worried about power draw or temps, they come stock with an ECO mode and depending on OEM the motherboard may have its own presets as well.
As Jaslion has said, HDDs are less reliable. Sounds like you just had a bad SSD, which isn't inherent to SSDs alone, every mass produced device will have a dud every now and then (I've had one SSD die, and then like 6+ others that I've ran for years with 0 issues whatsoever, plus even more than that at work which have also all had 0 issues). If you're worried about drive failure then run 2 SSDs in a mirror array, and keep backups of your important files on an external drive (or if you're super worried, then keep a backup offsite too).
