waterjug reacted to TuxMint in The Restrict Act, Supposedly To Ban Tik Tok, Will (probably) NOT Put You In Jail For Using a VPN. It mentions even VERY Futuristic technologies.
I'm not here to talk politics, I hate politics. What I want to do with this post is raise awareness, and act as a plea for help. Help in spreading the word, and hopefully stopping one of the biggest threats to a free internet in the United States. I'm talking about the recent bill introduced to congress called the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act, aka the RESTRICT Act. This bill was written for the use of banning Tik Tok in the United States, but it so much more than that and very dangerous! The problem is the very broad and confusing language the bill uses, Tik Tok isn't even mentioned in the bill. If passed, this gives the U.S. government the authority to ban any technology they want, and to go after anyone who they deem a "threat", at which point they can access your computer, phone, video games, cameras etc. Basically anything with an internet connection. It could also criminalize cryptocurrency, and VPN's. In fact, if criminalized, using a VPN to access a banned app for example, carries with it a $1million fine and/or up to 20 years of jail time and/or the forfeit of property to the U.S. government.  Now I said I don't want to talk politics and I still don't, but no matter which way you lean or how you vote, you know this power can and will be abused no matter who is in charge. Even if you don't care because you're not in the United States, I believe if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere. I'm leaving some links below to articles who probably can explain it better than I can, and the bottom link is the bill in full as far as I'm aware, with the number S.686 near the top of the bill. Please, spread the word and raise awareness as fast as possible, and encourage others to fight this! If someone from LTT happens to see this, please, make a video on it if nothing else to just raise awareness for your viewers in the U.S.

A lot of newer laptops use passive cooling anyway, I'm sure your fine. If you are just doing light single threaded tasks anyway. If you are playing Cyberpunk 4k 240hz on there it will burn you more than the surface of the sun, but old laptops don't do that, so you're fine

It's only hysteric alarmists and journalists looking for clicks that keep making claims about an incoming pandemic, that's for sure. I have a hard time imagining some disease managing to spread worldwide and killing even just 100k people with modern protocols. I'm no virologist, but 10k worldwide deaths seems to me like something that just about might be possible at most.

Granted, 10k would still be a lot of people.

The PSU and surge protector should protect them. You're fine.

The PSU should be able to let your components down easy through its capacitors, even if only for a fraction of a second.

I guess the only glaring issue that could arise is a HDD head crash. That said, just turn off the system before you flip the breaker.

Your PSU will be totally fine
Click the link in my sig called "you don't need a big psu" it shows a gamersnexus video of how most high-end systems usually only draw ~300W
I'd reccomend stepping up to an RX 470 though, since it's a huge leap in performance for not that much extra money.

waterjug got a reaction from Crismon in WARNING- Be careful when buying Ryzen gen 2 or 3 motherboards
This only applies if you are buying a Gen 2 or 3 Ryzen cpu.
A lot of AM4+ motherboards are advertised at compatible with gen 2 or gen 3, but although they are advertised as such, many of them are only compatible with a BIOS update. But in order to update the BIOS, you need a gen 1 compatible chip in order to make the board compatible with gen 2. My friend recently was building his first PC, and after a lot of troubleshooting, he had to take it all apart after he figured out the motherboard shipped with an old bios. In fact, the way he found out was going back to look at the reviews on the product page to find this-

I agree with this guy, this is ridiculous that companies cheap out with false advertising like this.
That was a review on the board he initially purchased which was this one. Although the board says it's compatible with gen 2, it's really not and caused a huge headache.

He ended up returning the board and buying this board, which we only bought because the seller actually confirmed it.

    Shoutout to ASRock.

In conclusion, read the reviews and examine the board closely if you are buying a motherboard for a Ryzen generation 2 or generation 3 processor. Or just buy a generation 1 chip and avoid this mess, or buy a stupid expensive board. This is mainly a warning for people on a budget, because I assume(or hope) this isn't an issue for more expensive boards.

Hopefully I saved you from the hassle and disappointment my friend went through.

Your GPU isn't dead, it's mostly dead.

Your VRAM is likely going out. If the GPU was entirely dead, then you wouldn't be able to boot with it installed in the first place.
